Kruja Castle is already enough reason to visit, plus the incredible views and charming market make it a must-visit destination for Albania.
Visiting Kruja would be a great day trip from Tirana. If you’re looking to escape the city, it can also be a nice weekend getaway to unwind.

Best Things To Do In Kruja Albania
There are some interesting things to do in Kruja, most of which you can see in a few hours. If you go in the morning, you can see most of the main things and then have lunch.
If it’s not extremely hot, you could arrive around midday and see everything before having a nice dinner and watching the sunset.
Here are some of the best things to do in Kruja, Albania.
1. Shop At Kruja Bazaar
The Old Bazaar is a vibrant and historic area that captures the essence of Albania’s rich cultural heritage. Dating back to the 17th century, this bustling market has stood the test of time.
Even after 400 years, the traditional charm has been preserved, offering visitors a glimpse into the country’s past. Kruja is also one of the best places in all of Albania to purchase souvenirs.
As you enter the Kruja Bazaar, you’ll notice that a lot is going on in a small space. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with an array of shops, stalls, and workshops, each exuding a unique character.
Here, you’ll find a lot of authentic Albanian handicrafts, including intricately woven carpets, vibrant textiles, and beautifully handcrafted ceramics. It feels like the spirit of Albania’s past is thriving in the present.
The Old Bazaar is great for those seeking unique souvenirs and gifts that reflect the country’s cultural heritage.
There are also traditional Albanian clothes on display too. Along with handmade items, you’ll also find some of the normal type souvenirs as well.
Immersing yourself in the Old Bazaar of Kruja is like stepping back in time (in a good way). This small Balkan country has progressed quite a bit, but it’s great to visit a place that makes tradition come alive.
2. Explore Kruja Castle
Perched atop a hill overlooking the city, Kruja Castle is an amazing tribute to Albania’s long history.
This ancient fortress, dating back to the 5th century, is a prominent landmark and a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts.
Kruja Castle also has stunning panoramic views of the valley below, the city of Kruja, and the towering mountains behind it.
On a clear day, you can even see the cityscape of Tirana, the capital of Albania. The castle’s vantage point is great to take photos from or even enjoy a nice meal at one of the restaurants nearby.

3. Visit The Skanderbeg Museum
The Skanderbeg Museum is a captivating tribute to the national hero of Albania, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg.
One of the most interesting things to do in Kruja – this museum stands as a symbol of the country’s rich historical legacy.
It pays homage to Skanderbeg’s remarkable achievements as a military leader and an icon of Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire.
As you enter the Skanderbeg Museum, you are greeted with a massive statue of Albania’s legendary figure.
The museum houses a remarkable collection of artifacts, weapons, armor, and historical documents that shed light on Skanderbeg’s life and his pivotal role in shaping Albania’s history.
There are exhibits that chronicle Skanderbeg’s military campaigns, strategic brilliance, and unwavering determination.
Detailed maps, paintings, and sculptures bring the era to life, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Skanderbeg and his army.
The Skanderbeg Museum itself was founded in 1982 and is housed within the Kruja Castle grounds.
The museum does have a castle-like appearance, similar to the historic towers of northern Albania, but it is not part of the original Kruja Castle ruins.
There is no entrance fee for Kruja Castle, but there is a 500 Lek fee for the Skanderbeg Museum, and Albanians can enter for free.
4. Learn At The Ethnographic Museum
The Ethnographic Museum offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the traditional way of life in the region.
Housed in a well-preserved Ottoman-style house, the museum showcases a rich collection of artifacts and exhibits that depict Albanian customs and traditions.
The carefully restored rooms are adorned with authentic furniture, household items, and tools, providing an authentic setting that reflects the lifestyle of Albanian families from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Demonstrating the creativity and talent of Albanian artisans, you can see things like traditional costumes and jewelry.
There are also intricately woven rugs, vibrant embroidery, and exquisite woodwork showcased within the traditional house.
The entrance fee into the Ethnographic Museum is 400 Lek.
5. Visit Santuario de Hajji Mustafa Baba
Best described as a sanctuary or shrine, the Santuario de Hajji Mustafa Baba is part of the Kruja Castle ruins.
It’s further down from the Skanderbeg Museum by the tower-like structures. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to check it out but if you’re a history enthusiast it might be worth a look.
Things To Do In Kruja (That Aren’t As Accessible)
There are some great things to do in Kruja if you want to stay for a few nights and explore the surrounding area. These aren’t as accessible though, so you’ll need your own car or a driver.
6. Hike To Teqeja e Sari Salltikut / Mount Sarisalltik
Located on the mountain of Kruja (Mali i Kruje), also known as Mount Sarisalltik, there is an important religious area to visit.
Hiking to the top is seen as a type of pilgrimage for Bektashi believers, a religious sect that exists in Albania. The religion is called the Betashi Order or Bektashism and is considered an Islamic Sufi mystic order.
Even if you’re not interested in the religious aspect, it’s still a hike with great views. The hike to Mount Sarisalltik does start in the town of Kruja, so it is possible without a car.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to do it while I was there, but reviews say that it is quite difficult.
There is also a road from Kruja that leads up to the religious site too, but I can’t verify if it is passable for most city cars.
7. Shtamë Pass Nature Park / Parku Kombëtar Qafë Shtamë
Located east of Kruja, Shtamë Pass Nature Park is about 45 mins drive away. If you’re wanting to really delve into nature and smell the pine trees, this is the place to go hiking.
This is also a popular water source for the bottled water company, Qafshtama in Albania.
8. Zezë Canyon / Kanionin e Zezë
Located about 30 mins away, the nearby Zezë Canyon might be worth checking out if you enjoy historical ruins and nature.
The canyon is beautiful by itself but there is also an Ottoman bridge, ruins of a medieval road, and a waterfall.
How To Get To From Tirana To Kruja
If you’re wanting to go by public transport, you will need to take the Kamez bus from the city center to the Tirana bus station.
The ticket should only be 40 lek. Once you arrive at the bus terminal you can buy a ticket to Kruje, for 150 lek (it might be more, as prices have risen).
You can take a taxi from Tirana for 25-30 euros or to go from the Tirana airport to Kruja, you can pay 22 euros.
You can always arrange a day trip to Kruja – there are a few options to choose from.
Where To Stay In Kruja Albania
There are a good few options to choose from if you do decide to stay for a few nights in Kruja.
If you want to even stay within Kruja Castle, you can stay at some guest houses – Room Nesti or Rooms Merlika.
There are also more modern apartments and fancier hotels like Hotel Kroi and Hotel Panorama if that is preferred.
Is Kruja Worth Visiting? – Final Thoughts
Kruja is totally worth a visit! It’s a great little town to escape to, especially because it almost feels like you are going back in time.
The history and beautiful views sealed the deal for me, I’ll definitely be back for another visit.
