As I was reminiscing after my latest trip to Koman Lake and 5 Stinet, I wrote these words in my journal.

“During the last light on Koman Lake, it feels like escaping, no routines, no stress. The brilliant stars and the silence at night remind you what it means to be human again.”

Some people have tight Albania itineraries, so even if you can’t make it for an overnight stay, make sure to do the kayaking day trip on Koman Lake – you won’t regret it.

Luxury In The Middle Of Nowhere?!

I’ll include photos throughout the article, so you can see for yourself how dreamy 5 Stinet – definitely one of the top accommodations in northern Albania. Being right on the lake and waking up to these views is priceless, seriously. I had to pinch myself a little bit and my friend had to drag me to the boat when it was time to leave.. not really, but you get the point.

There are some nice touches, like the embroidered towels and bathrobes, which are super cozy.

Of course, breakfast is also included, even though I was so full from dinner, I still managed. My Albanian friend said this,

“Best hotel breakfast I’ve had in all of Albania”

Some high praise right there!

It’s fair to mention, there is no road access to 5 Stinet. Everything comes in and out by boat, and also a 2-hour road journey from Koman to Shkoder (or longer to Tirana). This means you’re getting a great family-run accommodation in a remote region, so it’s not like you can compare it to hotels in major cities.

Organic, Traditional Mountain Cuisine

One of the best rules to follow in Albania – leaving the city means you will find the best traditional Albanian food. Deep in the Albanian Alps, you will find some of the best cheese (and other dairy products), honey, grilled meats and fish, etc.

I was really impressed with the food served at 5 Stinet. I have eaten at other guest houses on Lake Koman, so I do have some authority to say it’s the best I’ve tried, especially with reasonable prices. The guest houses in Shala River charge way more for low-quality / small portions.

Here are a few suggestions for your order:

• House wine – If you drink alcohol, try 5 Stinet’s home-made wine, it is very good.
• Grilled pork – We had a mix meat platter, and they were all good, but this was my favorite by far.
• Salce Kosi – A traditional strained yogurt sauce, it’s a dip that goes with everything. The one at 5 Stinet is one of my favorites I’ve ever tried.
• 5 Stinet Salad – With this house salad, you’re getting a colorful mix of greens, different cheeses, and fruits. 

Underrated For Summer

If you’re like me, you hate extreme heat, and Albania always gets hit with a heat wave in the summer. At 5 Stinet, it was perfect because the mountains make it a bit cooler, just enough to be able to enjoy being outside still.

Plus, the hotel is located right on the water, so at any time you can go for a swim, go kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding. While everyone heads to crowded beaches, it’s easy to find peace on Koman Lake. 

Mix Of Tradition, Beauty, Adventure

Tradition – Northern Albania has its own distinct cultural markers, one of the most obvious being the Gheg dialect of the Albanian language being spoken. The mountains where 5 Stinet resides are also known for having the last tribal system in Europe, strongly survived into the 20th century. The whole region is steeped in history and can be really interesting to learn about. You can read more about these accounts in Robert Elsie’s The Tribes of Albania – History, Society and Culture.

Though you might not see obvious signs of the tribes, trust me, it remains. One example is that most businesses in Albania are family-run. 5 Stinet is no different. All of the employees are uncles, cousins, etc. so don’t be surprised if you meet many people with the same last name. In a world of globalization, this is so rare. Also, when I was there, it was obvious that the staff work very hard all day to make it a nice experience for you, so make sure to be kind.

Beauty – A great part of staying at 5 Stinet is that you can still fit a trip into the famous Lumi i Shales (Shala River). I’ve visited a few times and it is worth the hype – such a unique place that you can’t miss.

Unfortunately, it’s not so peaceful since many guesthouses/restaurants play loud party music. Instead of staying there overnight, I’d suggest staying at 5 Stinet and then taking the daily 10 AM boat that goes to Shala River. After a few hours, you can return to the hotel or to the Koman ferry terminal.

Adventure – One of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of Koman Lake is by kayaking. 5 Stinet has kayaks for rent for guests (10 euro), which I would highly recommend taking advantage of.

“As a beginner, I was apprehensive about being on the water. Then, after learning the paddle functions, I became more confident. Being in the middle of Koman Lake, with the sun and calmness of the water, it turned out to be such an adventure. Soon we wanted to upgrade to stand-up paddle boarding, which was even easier (if you sit or are on your knees)!”- Adelina

Since this was her first time swimming in a lake and trying kayaking, getting to share this time with my best friend was priceless.

First Impressions (Literally)

Do you ever just have those moments that stop you dead in your tracks, and you think:

“so this is what it means to be human”

“this is what it means to be alive”

… suddenly all the hardships that have come before don’t seem so bothersome because now you’re in this exact moment. Now it has all been worth it.

Whatever sparks this in you is the key to life – keep that protected and tucked away for a rainy day. 

Back in 2019, I had one of these moments during my biggest solo trip to date in Europe. I spent one month traveling alone for the first time, in many countries that people warned me to avoid. Thankfully, the cheesy Facebook videos about Albania’s culture left me undeterred from these negative Nancys.

Deep in the north of Albania, I decided to take the ferry. This was before Albania was a trending destination, so I felt brave and adventurous as I sat at the front of the ferry watching the insane lake views. I remember looking to my right and seeing these little cabins perched on a hillside and thinking, “how epic would it be to stay there”.

Oh, how funny the universe is, because six years later, I would have a website specifically dedicated to northern Albania, and that same hotel would ask me to stay with them! Talk about coming full circle..

Anyway, I hope this gives you an idea of the impact this beautiful place has had on me. I can’t promise that you’ll have the same spiritual experience, but it can’t hurt to try.

With no road access, everything arrives by boat, but that remoteness is exactly what makes it stand out. From its lakeside setting, you can spend your days kayaking, swimming, or taking the daily boat to explore the Shala River, before coming back to a proper meal and a quiet evening under the stars.

The food is some of the best I’ve had in the region, and the cooler mountain air makes summer far more enjoyable than Albania’s crowded beaches. 5 Stinet is easily one of the best places to experience the magic of Koman Lake. I hope you love it as much as I did.

If you’re like me, before moving to Europe, I had no idea what Agroturism meant! Maybe this is because I grew up in a rural area, so the idea of being out in nature, growing your own food, and being around animals isn’t such a foreign concept.

On the other hand, many who grow up in urban centers don’t have these opportunities, which has created a surge in popularity for farm stays (also known as agrotourism). 

Agrotourism in Albania means connecting with the country’s rural soul—staying in family-run farmhouses/guesthouses, tasting homemade raki, helping with seasonal harvests and animal care, along with experiencing traditions passed down through generations.

What makes agrotourism so special is that each stay is unique in its own right – a French farm stay will be vastly different than an Albanian agrotourism experience. From the calming natural environments, organic food specialization, and rich cultural aspects, there’s always a reason to sign up for another agrotourism stay.

The Ultimate Albanian Agrotourism Experience – Lulebore Guesthouse

This traditional Albanian food varies greatly from what you can find in restaurants around the country since it is all sourced from their own produce. Here are a few traditional foods that you can try during your Albanian agrotourism stay.

Ferliku

Ferliku is made by slow-roasting an entire pig/goat/lamb over an open fire on a spit. This usually signifies a special occasion and is a ritual of hospitality – the process can take hours, and guests are often invited to watch and share stories.

Qervish

Qervish is a hearty village dish, typically made with cornmeal and tender pieces of lamb or goat, slow-cooked until it reaches a porridge-like consistency. This is the comforting type of meal that follows a long day of hiking or farm activities.

Supë Me Hithra

Supë me hithra (stinging nettle soup) is made from foraged stinging nettles, often cooked with rice, onions, and a touch of olive oil. It’s especially popular in spring, when the young nettle leaves are fresh, and is known for its nutritional benefits.

Fli

Fli is a bit more well-known and can be found in some restaurants, but of course, homemade will always be supreme! It is made by layering thin crepes of batter and slowly baking them over hot coals for hours. Fli is usually prepared by women in rural homes, especially in the north.

Learning Farming Practices

On the farm, there is a wide range of activities available that all need to be done, regardless of whether you and your group are present or not. This is the great part – the activities are not simply being done to entertain tourists, but out of necessity for the family’s well-being. 

From learning how to make cheese and milk cows to even making honey, there’s something that will be of interest for everyone. There’s also learning how to make Raki, a traditional clear alcohol made from fruit in the Balkan region of Europe.

One of the most common is from grapes, though Lulebore does plumb too. You’ll also get to feed the chickens and ducks, and pick fresh eggs straight from the nest for breakfast! Depending on the season, some fruit picking will be involved too – wild pomegranates, cherries, apples, plums, and figs.

Adventure Activities

While you might be wondering, what can you do so deep in the wilderness? Don’t worry Lulebore has you covered! There are plenty of easy walks to do, cool places to see in the 4X4 vehicle, and even some horse trekking.

If you’re lucky, you might see wild horses or see the Upupa Comune and Woodpeckers while birdwatching. As the light fades and the village house lights slowly turn out, there is an overwhelming silence.

Even at night time, there’s still some adventure with your guide, like looking through the telescope, listening for the croaks of frogs and the distant calls of owls and other night birds.

Accommodation at Lulebore Agrotourism

An agrotourism experience in Albania isn’t about luxury but authenticity. By only having 4 rooms, the guesthouse keeps the historical integrity and limits overdevelopment in the area, which has become a serious issue in other destinations in Albania.

The setting is extremely peaceful, with just a few wolf howls now and then. Rooms are a bit rustic but serve their purpose. There is one shared bathroom per floor, so it’s shared between 4 to 5 people.

Why Visit Komani Lake?

Komani Lake is known as one of Albania’s most breathtaking natural attractions, often compared to Scandinavian fjords, though it is actually a man-made reservoir that spans 34km.

Lake Koman has been praised by travel guides for many years, which means it is far from a “hidden gem”, though this doesn’t mean it isn’t worth visiting Lake Komani.In terms of transport within northern Albania, it is a significant gateway, opening up the Albanian Alps and the renowned Valbona-Theth hiking trip.

Why The Nickname “Thailand Of Albania”?

When avid world travelers started venturing deeper into the Albanian wilderness, many couldn’t help comparing it to the tropics of Asia. Now in our modern age, we have tourists who have seen many far-apart continents and nations.

This used to not be the case. Of course, there were individual outsiders coming to northern Albania for the last 500 years – I’m talking about religious persons, researchers, and adventure seekers. You can read more about these accounts in Robert Elsie’s The Tribes of Albania – History, Society and Culture. A very interesting book worth your time – I’m working my way through it now.

Currently, we are at a unique point in history due to globalization. For decades, Albania was shielded from this sense of rapid homogeneous evolution towards technology, which has created a distinct culture compared with its European neighbors.

This extends to these remote parts of the Albanian Alps, which have been known by locals for centuries, yet new to foreigners. These fresh eyes differ from the previous adventure seekers who came a few hundred years ago, since they didn’t have the same opportunities that modern travelers have today. 

To be precise, it is not Komani Lake that necessarily resembles Thailand since it is a deep, man-made reservoir. Thus, the color of the water tends to be darker. The place that has sparked so much interest is a tributary flowing into the giant Lake Koman, which is named Shala River (Lumi i Shales in Albanian).

It is a canyon with high walls, lush vegetation, and crystal clear water that remains icy all year round. Its color is a mix of turquoise and baby blue, giving a striking contrast to the tropical green mountain sides. Check out my full Lumi i Shales video here!

How To Get To Komani Lake By Bus

From Shkoder: Approximately 2 hours by minibus, departing around 6:30 AM from Hotel Rozafa. You can check the bus tickets here. From Tirana: Around 3.5 hours by minibus, with departures near Zogu i Zi roundabout at 4:50 AM. 

Driving To Komani Lake

While driving yourself is possible, be cautious of narrow and winding roads. There are also an insane number of potholes, so driving slowly is crucial – it might not be the best to take a low-riding rental car.

Hopefully, they will renovate or completely replace it soon. Check the Tirana Airport car rental options. I always recommend renting there because you can get better, full coverage insurance. It’s also advisable to reserve ferry tickets in advance if bringing a vehicle.

Komani Lake Ferry – What To Expect

• Duration: The ferry journey from Koman to Fierze takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. 
• Operators: Berisha Ferry, Alpin, and Rozafa Ferry are the main service providers. 
• Ticket Prices: Range from €8 to €10 for passengers; additional fees apply for vehicles and bicycles. 
• Booking: Tickets can be reserved online via the operators’ websites or paid in cash upon boarding.

On The Komani Lake Ferry Ride

• Scenic Views: Towering mountains, narrow gorges, and turquoise waters throughout the journey.
• Onboard Amenities: Some ferries offer multiple decks, while some are smaller. There is indoor seating and open-air areas; some have small cafes. There are also cafes before you get on the ferry, so buy an espresso if you’d like to use the toilet.

Best Komani Lake Tours / Things To Do

• Go kayaking on Komani Lake
• Join a cooking class on Komani Lake
• Shala River: Known as the “pearl of Koman,” this river boasts crystal-clear waters and dramatic cliffs, accessible via boat tours. Check out the specific Shala River day trips here.

Where To stay At Lake Komani?

All three, Riverside Komani Lake, 5 Stinet and Bujtina Adora, are further along Lake Komani. They have beautiful surroundings and are very popular. If you are on a budget, check out some of the guest houses in the actual village of Koman before the ferry terminal.

There’s also an amazing property in the village called Koman Paradise by Romina that would be perfect for a romantic getaway.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Komani Lake?

• Season: Late spring to early autumn (April to October) offers the best weather and ferry availability. Ferry season runs from April–early November.
• Weekdays: This is one of the most popular places in all of Albania, so no matter what day you go it will be busy. During the high season, going on a weekday might help with this slightly.

Practical Tips For “Thailand Of Albania”

Planning a trip to Komani Lake isn’t difficult, but it’s worth knowing a few practical tips to make the most of your adventure. From what to pack and how early to arrive, to ferry reservations and safety guidelines, this section covers the essentials.

What should I pack for Komani Lake?

1. Clothing – Bring layers, as mornings can be chilly, and the ferry can be windy. I’d also recommend nice hiking sandals like Chacos, because you will need a versatile shoe for all the outdoor activities.
2. Snacks and plenty of water!
3. Swimwear, towel, sunscreen, change of clothes for after the water activities

How early should I arrive at the Lake Koman ferry terminal?

• Passengers: at least 15 minutes early; vehicles: 30 minutes early
• For reservations, book ferry tickets in advance, especially if traveling with a vehicle, to ensure availability.

Can I bring a car or bike on the Komani Lake ferry?

• Yes—cars, bikes, and motorcycles can be transported, but a reservation is required, and space is limited
• How much does it cost? – pricing can change, but usually 7 € for cars, 10 € for bikes, and 20–25 € for motorcycles

Is Lake Komani safe?

Albania is generally safe for tourists; however, always take standard travel precautions. If you want to know more, you can read about living and safety in northern Albania.

• Don’t jump from the ferry
• Supervise children
• Use life jackets
• Keep 112 number handy in case of an emergency
• Bring your trash back or use bins onboard—litter is an issue in the area

Dark Side Of Lake Komani

Like so many travel destinations we see on social media, Lake Komani is no different. It is not perfect by any means. For starters, many businesses that operate are not legal, and at one point, the government sent police to shut down everything happening at the Lake Koman ferry terminal.

This halted all traffic transport – remember, people take cars, motorcycles, and vans on the ferry to save many hours of driving. Of course, this meant tourists who paid for day trips or multi-day excursions to Koman or Shala River were stranded, with no recourse.

This ban on Lake Koman didn’t last long, though. I’m sure lots of cash was exchanged behind the scenes, and full operations opened up again. And to everyone’s relief, since many people rely on tourism to support their families throughout the off-season as well.

Lake Komani Pollution Reality

As someone who has been living in Albania for years (and has traveled to many underdeveloped countries), I don’t find trash pollution to be shocking. I guess we can chalk this up to desensitization. PS, this also works the opposite way too. Now I have become way more sensitized to crime.

Since we have super-low crime and harassment rates in Albania, this is what I am used to. This is the safest place I have traveled to/lived! When I hear about a local kidnapping or murder, I am so shocked because it is rare. Compared to how I grew up (America), this is so different. Kidnapping, school shootings, terrorism? Oh that’s nothing!

Anytime I have been on the Komani Lake ferry or the Shala River boat, I have always heard foreign tourists showing visible disgust and dismay for the floating trash. In my mind, I saw it, and I did think it was sad, but I definitely didn’t have the same outrage that they showed.

So all of this to say, it depends on your background. If you’re from a Western country, you may be shocked by the trash in Albania. I say this so you can set your expectations accordingly. 

PSsst you shouldn't drink the tap water in *most* places in Albania. I suggest purchasing a filter water bottle to limit single use plastic.

FAQs For Lake Komani

Still have questions before your trip? Komani Lake is stunning but also remote.. Below are answers to some of the most common questions travelers ask, from transportation and swimming spots to where you can stay overnight.

How to get to Komani Lake from Shkoder?

Take the SH25 road heading east from Shkodër through Vau i Dejës and follow the route along the Drin River toward Koman. The total distance is about 55 km, but due to winding mountain terrain and rough conditions, expect the drive to take around 1½–2 hours by car or minibus. Shared minibuses depart from Sheshi Demokracia around 6:30 AM to align with the 9 AM ferry schedule.

How to get to Komani Lake from Tirana?

From Tirana, follow the SH1 motorway (or A3 to join SH1) north to Shkodër (~100 km), then head east on SH25 to Koman. The total drive is approximately 134 km. Although Google Maps may suggest around 3 hours, the realistic travel time is closer to 4 hours because of the slower mountain segment after Shkodër.

Shared minibuses leave from Gazheli Petrol Station near Zogu i Zi at around 5 AM, aiming to reach the Koman terminal by 8:30–9 AM.

PSsst Public transport is chaotic. It doesn't work well if you have a short amount of time in Albania so I'd highly recommend renting a car. Compare the best deals on Tirana car rentals.

Can you go swimming in Lake Komani?

Yes, you can go swimming in Lake Komani but in specific areas. The important thing to remember that Komani Lake is a lot more than a tourist destination. It has a hydroelectric power station and an important mode of transport for goods and locals alike.

The best option is to ask you accommodation or cafe nearby if they know of a suitable swimming spon on Lake Komani. If you are near the village of Koman, you can go to Yama Beach. Also, beware that is a trash pollution problem and it might not be enjoyable or safe – though this is dependant on the weather, water levels, and recent clean up activity.

Can you go camping at Komani Lake?

Yes, you can go camping at Lake Komani. There are some guest houses that will accept small payments for you to camp there, which gives access to fresh water and electricity. Check out “Camping Komani” and “Serenity Camping”.

Are there any hostels at Lake Komani?

No, unfortunately there aren’t any hostels near Lake Komani. If you’re on a budget, the best bet is to go camping at Komani Lake or to stay at a guest house. Shkoder Albania is located in an amazing location since it’s right on the largest lake in the Balkans (Shkodra Lake), 30 minutes away from the Adriatic seaside, and at the footstep of the glorious Albanian Alps!

Visiting the mountain village of Theth and the beautiful Shala River are two of the most popular day trips from Shkoder! A lot of this has to do with social media since these places are all over Instagram.

Even though they are well known, arranging a day trip from Shkoder is the easiest option for budget travelers or those who don’t want to rent a car or hitchhike.

1. Theth

Theth is a picturesque mountain village located in the northern part of Albania and makes for an excellent day trip from Shkoder.

It’s probably the most visited place in northern Albania and definitely one of the biggest tourist attractions in the whole country.

It’s well displayed on social media which means it can be very crowded, make sure to check out all of my tips and things to know before going to Theth!

Theth is renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Surrounded by rugged mountains, it is settled in a lush valley with a pristine, icey blue river.

It offers a breathtaking backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. It is situated within the Theth National Park, which is part of the larger Balkan Peace Park Project.

The park is a haven for hikers and adventure seekers, boasting numerous hiking trails, including the famous path to the Blue Eye waterfall –  a mesmerizing natural spring with crystal-clear waters.

In Albanian, it is called “Syri i Kalter”, but there are two in Albania, so this one is referred to as the one in the north – the other is in Saranda in the south. It’s a popular spot for a refreshing swim and provides a fun photo opportunity.

Theth is also known for preserving the traditional customs and architecture of Ghegaria (northern Albania). Visitors can see the charming stone houses in the traditional mountain style.

While it’s possible to visit Theth in a day, many visitors choose to stay overnight to fully experience the village’s tranquility. There are guesthouses and traditional inns where you can enjoy warm Albanian hospitality and some great organic, mountain cuisine.

You can do mostly outdoor activities, like hiking, swimming, and exploring the historical Lock-in Tower. It’s a great opportunity to take in the serene atmosphere and appreciate the slower pace of life in the Albanian Alps.

Getting There: Theth can be reached from Shkoder by road, and the journey itself offers scenic views. It’s approximately a 2 hour drive.

You can take the bus to Theth, there are two a day. You can check all the details in my Shkoder public transport guide.

The alternative is to drive but you should make sure to rent the appropriate car as it can be a challenging road with lots of zig zags. The weather can change for the worse quickly in the mountains so check conditions before setting out.

You can also do an organized day trip to Theth which helps to alleviate any driving stress! If you are short on time, I’d highly recommend it. You can also find day tours leaving from Tirana.

2. Lumi i Shales & Komani Lake

Visiting Lumi i Shales (Shala River) is a great idea for a day trip from Shkoder. Whether you’re interested in boat tours, swimming, or simply enjoying the picturesque surroundings, Shala River promises a day filled with natural beauty and outdoor adventure.

Lumi i Shales, also known as Shala River, is a beautiful waterway that meanders through the dramatic Albanian Alps. Its crystal-clear waters and surrounding landscapes make it a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

The river’s inviting but freezing waters provide an excellent opportunity for swimming and relaxation. Its purity and refreshing coolness make it a perfect spot to unwind on a hot day.

The journey along the Shala River is not just about the water; it’s also about the stunning scenery. The river has impressive canyons and rock formations. Towering cliffs, lush vegetation, and the sense of being completely surrounded by remote nature is an amazing experience.

After enjoying the river, you can eat at some of the local guesthouses and have fish caught in the river, along with other sides like bean soup, fresh salad, local cheese, etc. 

Beyond the river, the Shala Valley offers opportunities for hiking and exploration. You can trek through the nearby mountains or visit nearby villages to get a deeper sense of the region’s culture.

Getting There: Shala River is accessible by road from Shkoder to the Koman port. From there you then need to take a boat trip through Komani Lake and before turning onto Shala River. The journey itself offers glimpses of northern Albania’s isolation and scenic beauty.

If you decide to stay in the capital, you can still do a day trip from Tirana to Shala River.

Other Awesome Day Trips From Shkoder

There are plenty of amazing options for Shkoder day trips, but unfortunately, you can’t rely on public transport to reach many places. My suggestion is to rent a car at Tirana Airport so you can make sure to purchase legitimate insurance coverage.

One of the consistent buses you could take for a Shkoder day trip is going to the beach town of Velipoje. Technically they are furgons (small vans) that go at sporadic times – usually when the furgon fills up or if the driver decides to go. Look at your options here on the updated Shkoder bus schedule.

3. Thrown Sands / Rana e Hedhun

Rana e Hedhun, also known as Thrown Sands, is a unique natural wonder located near Shengjin, Albania. It’s renowned for its extraordinary geological formation where a a large sand dune goes from the top of a cliff to the seaside.

It is an excellent place to relax and soak up the sun. This large, sandy beach provides comfortable spots for sunbathing and plenty of room for beach activities.

Rana e Hedhun is easily accessible from Shkoder and other nearby towns. It’s a relatively short drive, making it a convenient day trip option for those looking to escape the city and explore Albania’s beautiful coastal landscapes.

Nearby Shengjin offers a variety of seafood restaurants where you can savor fresh catch-of-the-day dishes. Enjoying a delicious seafood meal by the sea is a delightful way to complete your day trip from Shkoder.

Try Restorant Detari, it’s my favorite. If you google the restaurant, the wrong location comes up so I’ve tagged the right one here.

4. Prekal Canyon

Located only 30 minutes driving away from Shkoder city center is the canyon of Prekal with the River Kiri running through it. It is also known as Kanione i Prekal and Kanione i Ures se Shtrejte – most locals just call it ‘Prekal’.

This is a popular swimming spot for locals in the summer. Unlike going to the beaches in Albania where you normally have to pay for a sunbed, going to Prekal is more cost-friendly for families.

It also has more adventure to it because it is a very deep canyon so it’s common to cliff jump into the water from different heights. Reserve your tour to Prekal here.

5. Razem & Boge

About 1-hour drive from Shkoder city center, you can reach the charming mountain villages of Razem and Boge. To reach Razem, you need to turn right off of SH21.

If you continue on SH21, you’ll reach the village of Boge. Both are beautiful areas where you can hike and have a picnic. In Razem there is also a large, level soccer/football field that you could play sports on too.

There are guesthouses in each village where you can eat, have a coffee and stay overnight. If you are visiting during the off-season (anytime besides June – August) some things could be closed.

In Razem, there are some restaurants/hotels that stay open so you can count on that when visiting. It didn’t seem like much was open when I visited Boge in the off-season.

6. Malesia e Madhe / SH20

Malesia e Madhe, which translates to “Great Highlands,” is a picturesque region located in the northern part of Albania. It is characterized by its stunning natural landscapes, including rugged mountains, lush valleys, and pristine rivers. The area’s untouched beauty is a major draw for nature enthusiasts.

Malesia e Madhe offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, trekking, and mountain biking. This is why I wrote a whole article about why it is the best road trip in Albania. The region is home to numerous trails that cater to varying skill levels, allowing visitors to explore the wilderness and take in breathtaking views.

It is easily accessible from Shkoder, making it a convenient day trip destination. The drive itself has scenic routes through the countryside for about 40 minutes before you start ascending into the highlands.

On the way back, you can stop at Bar Restaurant Syri i Sheganit for beautiful views of Lake Shkodra.

7. Ulza Regional Nature Park

Ulza Regional Nature Park is a beautiful natural area known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, making it a great Shkoder day trip if you’re a nature lover.

There’s a lake and the park offers a few hiking trails to explore its natural wonders. Ulza Park has numerous bird species inhabiting the area. It’s a great place to spot various avian species in their natural habitat.

It’s conveniently located, so It’s easily accessible for a day trip from Shkoder or Tirana. On your way back to Shkoder, stop at Restaurant Bezhi for some excellent grilled meat.

8. Cape Of Rodon / Lagoon of Patok

The Cape of Rodon has natural beauty that you’ll appreciate if you love the outdoors. It has some dramatic cliffs and beaches to swim at too, perfect for a fun, outdoorsy day trip from Shkoder. The area around the cape offers excellent hiking and exploration opportunities.

Some trails lead to various viewpoints where you can admire the coastal vistas. You can also see old communist bunkers, the Church of Mamica and explore the ruins of the ancient Rodoni Castle. The Cape of Rodon holds significant historical importance in Albania.

It is associated with the legendary Albanian hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, who led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. The cape is said to be one of Skanderbeg’s strongholds.

On the way back to Shkoder, stop at the coastal Lagoon of Patok for sunset. You can have some fresh seafood on cute, over-water bungalows there. If you’re in Tirana, you can visit with an organized tour to the Cape of Rodon with a wine tasting.

9. Kruja

Kruje (also seen as Kruja) is one of Albania’s most historically significant towns, known as the hometown of the national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. Skanderbeg led a resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, and Kruje was his stronghold.

Visiting Kruje allows you to delve into Albania’s rich history and learn about Skanderbeg’s legacy. Kruje Castle (Kalaja e Krujes) is perched atop a hill with commanding views of the surrounding area. The castle houses a museum dedicated to Skanderbeg and the history of the resistance.

Exploring the castle and its museum is a must for history enthusiasts. In addition to the Skanderbeg Museum, Kruje also boasts an Ethnographic Museum (Muzeu Etnografik) where you can explore Albanian traditions, clothing, and daily life through various exhibits.

Kruje’s Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjeter) is a bustling market where you can shop for traditional Albanian crafts, souvenirs, and local products. Kruje is a great day trip from Shkoder because it’s conveniently located within a relatively short drive from Shkoder, about an hour and a half. If you end up staying in Tirana, you can also visit from there with this organized day trip to Kruje and Sari Salltik Cave.

10. Qafshtama National Park

Qafshtama is similar to Ulza but a much larger park that is located on the same road going to Kruja but much deeper into the mountains. It takes about 45 minutes from Kruja.

You might recognize this particular name as it’s on water bottles all over Albania – the company and water source are in this park.

Lumi i Shales is a river deep in the heart of northern Albania. Because of the lush vegetation and jagged mountains, it reminds some of Asia.

The clear, mesmerizing blue waters are the main draw for tourists and have gained Shala River to be nicknamed the “Thailand of Albania.” If you’re in a hurry, check out the available tours and transport options for Shala River.

Why Visit Shala River?

There are a lot of amazing destinations in northern Albania, but many people don’t know about them yet.

Shala River is a great example of how beautiful, remote, and wild this region can be. Here are a few things to know about why you should visit Lumi i Shales!

Convenience

Albania is still developing its infrastructure. When tourists come to visit, they feel this a lot with things like transport. Visiting Shala River is one of the more convenient destinations because many tour companies arrange bus and boat transport together.

This means you don’t have to worry about matching up times or doing any research. If you’re coming from Tirana, you can arrange a trip to Lumi i Shales here. You can speak with your hostel in Shkoder and see if they have tickets available – many of them do.

The Beauty Of Lumi i Shales

It’s easy to see from the photos why someone would want to visit Shala River and Komani Lake, but it’s a little bit more than just the color of the water.

The canyon of Lumi i Shales is deep, so once you enter, it gets more narrow. You can feel the air temperature get lower since there’s more shade.

I visited in July, and the canyon was still lush with green vegetation, with trees clinging and growing on the sides. It’s so interesting to look at the canyon walls with the intricate way the stone has been carved away.

The green surroundings complement the turquoise waters nicely as you arrive at the area where boats do drop off and pick up.

Walking around, you’ll see handmade wooden bridges built for you to cross deeper parts of Shala River. With these, you can access guesthouses too. Just be careful because they do have a weight limit – the signs say 10 people maximum.

The towering green peak rise up around you as you explore different parts of Lumi i Shales, giving the impression you’ve been transported to some type of oasis.

It is a stark contrast to the Albanian Riviera, which has a lot of dry mountains which remind me more of Middle East scenery. Both are beautiful, but adding Lumi i Shales and to your Albanian itinerary will give you a nice variety of scenery to enjoy.

Activities To Do

Lumi i Shales has more than you think. I figured it would be a place to swim for a few hours, but once I was there, I regretted not staying for 1 or 2 nights.

Some of the activities that you can do are, of course, swimming, but there’s also a zipline, kayak rentals, and a hiking trail (you will need to ask locals, they will know about it).

I brought my portable camping hammock to set up, and it was a game changer, especially if you don’t want to rent a sunbed. There’s also free camping, according to this Google Maps tag.

Best Lumi i Shales Tours

A lot of people choose to do a day trip to Shala River, which is a good option if you’re short on time. If you have a bit more flexibility, I would suggest staying for longer.

This overnight tour to Lumi i Shales is perfect for those wanting to spend more time there. This means you’ll get to enjoy nature in the evening and the next morning before the day trippers arrive (around 11 AM).

How Long To Stay At Shala River

As I mentioned before, once I arrived, I wished I had come to stay overnight. Part of this is because it’s beautiful, but also because it’s so remote.

Taking the day trip from Shkoder involved getting the bus at 6:30 AM and then arriving in Lumi i Shales around 10:45/11 AM.

Then our guide told us we needed to be back at the boat to leave at 2 PM. This means I spent 8 to 9 hours in transport to only be at Lumi i Shales for 3 hours.

Part of the trip is taking the boat from Koman Port to Shala River, which is beautiful but exhausting when you do it twice a day.

I do think it was worth doing it, but if I had to do it again, I wouldn’t make the day trip but instead the overnight trip.

Lumi i Shales Accommodation

There are some very cute guesthouses to stay at along the Shala River bed. One of the most recognized is the Bee Eco Guest House, though they only have two rooms to book.

Blini Park Guest House is another option with a large variety of rooms to book, though they do play loud music, so it might not be the most tranquil.

Livadhi Guesthouse is located further up the river, farther away from the boat dock but will offer more tranquility.

Another option is to stay away from the main area visited on Lumi i Shales. There are a few guesthouses along the way that you pass.

These will undoubtedly be more tranquil but still offer the opportunity to visit the popular riverbed area of Shala River when you’d like.

From these guest houses, you can easily kayak or go on a short boat ride. Though it’s named Riverside Koman Lake, it is actually located on Lumi i Shales.

This place has beautiful views of the river – as I passed it on my tour, I remember thinking how nice it would be to stay there.

That also goes for 5 Stinet – another guest house located a bit farther, directly on Komani Lake. There are 5 different cabins facing the lake to enjoy. The views are amazing.

What To Pack For Shala River

It is best to pack what you would normally take to the beach. Even though you’re heading deep into the mountains, the sun will still be strong.

Make sure to bring protection – a good hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, of course.

Some people claim you can drink from Lumi i Shales, but with all of the recent tourism development, I would advise against it unless you have a well-reviewed water filter or Lifestraw water bottle.

Make sure to bring some good water shoes or sandals; my favorites are Chaco sandals and Teva sandals.

I also brought my ENO hammock, which was perfect for laying in after swimming!

What To Eat At Lumi i Shales

If you’re on a budget, I would recommend packing a picnic for lunch if you come on the day trip.

This is partly because you don’t have much time to enjoy if you spend even 30-45 minutes at a restaurant since 3 hours goes quickly.

I’d also recommend a picnic because the lunch I had wasn’t very good if I’m honest. The guest house my friends and I ate at had a set menu, so each of us paid 1400 lek (this didn’t include drinks).

It makes sense because it’s a remote location, so much of the food travels on the boat for a long way.

But on the other hand, it was very bland, and we received small portions, to the point that we left the restaurant still hungry.

Swimming and being in the sun makes you extra hungry, so it’s good to bring your own food to make sure you’re covered. Other guest houses might have been better food – we only tried one place.

I’m not trying to be a negative nancy; rather, I don’t want you to have high expectations for the food and then be let down. You go to Shala River for nature, not necessarily the food. 

3 Important Things To Know For Shala River

By this point, most people realize that what you see on social media is not reality. I wanted to include some of these things you should know before visiting Lumi i Shales.

Trash Pollution In Koman Lake & Shala River

On the boat ride from Komani Ferry port, you are bound to see trash floating in the water… Who knows how much that is at the bottom – I’m sure it’s a lot.

Most of the time, that part is left out when you see videos about Koman Lake and Shala River, but it’s the unfortunate reality.

I think it’s better to warn you so your expectations can be set accordingly. This was my second time visiting (2nd time at Koman).

Even though I knew to expect it, it still made me quite sad to see such a wonderful place being harmed by pollution, especially since this type of pollution is easily avoidable too.

Water Color

Koman Lake and Shala River both have beautiful blue-colored water, the river especially. This can vary though, depending on different factors like the weather, time of day, etc.

The photos of Lumi i Shales do tend to be quite edited too. Shala River is very beautiful, but it did look different than many of the high-saturation images and videos I had seen. So this is just something to keep in mind!

The Crowds

Many claim that Lumi i Shales is a hidden gem in Albania, but I have to say that it’s not unknown at all. There are lots of tourists that come on day trips (as I did).

At first, when I arrived a little before 11 AM, it didn’t seem like there were many people. I took a lot of photos and then went swimming.

As I was enjoying the water, boats, and boats of other visitors arrived, quickly filling up the river bank. This was early July; if you plan on visiting in July or August, you can expect a good amount of people there.

It’s still a great place to enjoy; I just wanted to warn you that it’s not the quiet, peaceful place that many photos make it out to be (at least during the day).

Here are some commonly asked questions about visiting Lumi i Shales. Hopefully, these will help you plan your visit!

Where is Lumi i Shales?

Lumi i Shales is located in Shkoder County of Northern Albania. Also known in English as Shala River, this beautiful destination is deep in the famous Albanian Alps.

Lumi i Shales originates in the mountain village of Theth from the Theth River and runs into the famous Komani Lake (which is actually a man-made reservoir).

How to get to Lumi i Shales?

Lumi i Shales is only accessible by boat. Many boats leave from Komani Port on Komani Lake. If you’re coming from Montenegro, Tirana, or Shkoder, the Komani Port will be where you need to go to.

Other boats to Shala River come from the Fierza Port. If you’re in Valbona or coming from Kosovo, Fierza will need to be your access point.

How do I get from Shkoder to Shala River?

To get from Shkoder to Shala River, you’ll need to take a minibus from Shkoder city center to the Koman Port on Komani Lake.

From there, you will need a boat heading directly for Lumi i Shales, not the normal ferry, which goes to the other end of the lake in Fierza.

You can arrange this trip with Travel North Albania. They do day trips to Shala River, but you can ask if you can make the trip overnight so you can return the following day.

How do I get from Tirana to Shala River?

To get from Tirana to Shala River, you’ll need to drive north out of the city on SH1 and then follow the signs for Shkoder.

Before reaching Shkoder, you will need to turn right on SH28 and head towards the Koman Port. The drive is roughly 3 hours and 136km.

The road to Komani Lake desperately needs repair – I wouldn’t recommend taking a rental car on it (unless it’s suited for bad roads).

You can also do a day trip to Shala River from Tirana, which is a great deal because it’s priced only a few dollars more than if you were to leave from Shkoder.

If you have an extra day, I’d highly recommend making an overnight trip to Lumi i Shales; it is a very beautiful area to explore (I wish I had stayed overnight).

What is the Lumi i Shales Water Temperature?

Lumi i Shales water temperature isn’t really recorded anywhere that I could find. I did see one online source saying the Theth River (the one that Shala River flows from) is 7 C (44.6 F).

If you’ve visited the Albanian Blue Eye, the temperature is 10 C, so that will give you an idea of what to expect at Shala River.

It might be slightly warmer towards the end of the summer, but I don’t think it will make much of a difference. It’s a fast-flowing stream, so the water doesn’t sit long enough to warm significantly.

I have to say it is very cold, though I enjoyed it. I grew up swimming in cold streams in the Appalachian mountains. Lumi i Shales feels very similar to that.

Even my Canadian friend who grew up swimming in cold waters couldn’t stay for very long in it.

Can you drink from Lumi i Shales?

Some people say that it’s safe to drink from Shala River, though I wouldn’t recommend it. At one point, I’m sure it was fine.

Now with the tourism development upstream in Theth and along Lumi i Shales, it might not be safe without using a Lifestraw or the Lifestraw water bottle. 

Is Lumi i Shales good for families?

Yes, Shala River is great for families. There is a small bit of a ‘partying’ vibe because there is loud music in some places, and you can purchase alcoholic drinks.

It’s not wild by any means. The river section goes on for a good bit, so there is room to pick a quieter spot.

You should be able to find some shallow spots that kids can safely enjoy. The water temperature might not be suitable for young children though.

Does Shala River have phone service or wifi?

On the bus from Shkoder and the boat ride to Lumi i Shales, there are many places you will lose phone service completely.

Once at Shala River, you definitely won’t have service since it’s in a deep mountain valley. Some guest houses have wifi, and some don’t, so if that is important, you should check with them beforehand.

Since it is remote, the wifi might not be the strongest, and depending on storms, it could be temporarily unavailable.

I’d recommend that you handle any business or research before setting off on the trip. Make sure to download any music or offline maps that you might want before leaving.

Is Shala River worth visiting?

I would say Shala River is 100% worth visiting. It’s a beautiful destination that showcases a unique side of Albania that visitors usually don’t see.

Right now, it’s not that well known, so it’s a good time to visit. There is a lot of development happening, so in a few years, it will probably be much more crowded.

Okay, enough is enough – I’ll let you in on the secret. The best place for an Albanian road trip is in the region known as Malesia e Madhe which is roughly translated to Great Highlands in English.

This area has some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen, plus there is a unique cultural aspect.

Because of its natural geographical barriers, Malesia e Madhe is where many Albanians fled, to escape the Ottoman invasion and rule.

This helped preserve traditional Albanian culture for future generations and allowed people to continue freely practicing their religion. If you decide to drive the SH20 road on your Albanian road trip, you will see what I mean.

It is a very remote part of Albania, and without that road, it would be difficult to access, which makes sense why the Ottomans were kept out.

Hopefully knowing this will give you more perspective about the struggles Albanians have faced. I found it hard to imagine what life was like back then for those brave people who resisted.

5 Tips For Your Albanian Road Trip

Since there isn’t much information about this road trip in Albania, I figured that there are important things to know before setting off.

Since Malesia e Madhe is pretty out of the way, it is essential to be prepared before going. Here are some good tips to know for having the best Albanian road trip!

1. Things To Do Along SH20

Since this area of Albania is remote, don’t expect man-made tourist attractions. There aren’t any museums to visit – the main draw to driving on this specific Albanian road trip is for natural beauty and outdoor activities. 

Viewpoints

There are plenty of beautiful viewpoints to stop at and take photos. This also provides a nice breather from driving as well. Since the roads can be a bit crazy, it’s good to stop and rest for a few minutes. 

Swimming

The road goes along Lumi i Cemi (Cemi River) so if it is a hot day, it would be super refreshing to stop. Depending on rainfall and weather, the river often has this gorgeous blue/green color.

Like most rivers in the Albanian mountains, it will be very cold so it might not be enjoyable for everyone to swim in.

I grew up with cold mountain streams so it’s not as difficult for me but I understand others wouldn’t be used to it. Test it out first by just submerging your feet.

Have a picnic

It’s a bit sparse on SH20 until you to the small village of Tamare. There are some places to stop and eat, most connected to guesthouses for visitors.

Alternatively, you can bring your food to have a picnic wherever you find a good spot to enjoy.

Just remember to take any trash or containers back with you, to not contribute further to the trash pollution issue that’s prevalent in all of Albania.

Hiking

The scenery in Malesia e Madhe is breathtaking and extremely wild. It’s amazing to explore, but imperative that you do so safely.

Many people use local guides that know the terrain and paths. If you do decide to go by yourself, make sure someone knows where you are, especially if you’re alone.

I’d recommend using a hiking all like AllTrails for guidance, and to have a backup power source as well. Also, weather can be extreme and change quickly, check with locals on weather conditions before going.

Though I’m not trying to scare you, you need to know that people die in these mountains for not taking them (and the weather) seriously.

Just recently French and Belgian tourists died in the nearby area of Valbona. Unfortunately, the Albanian rescue services often have to risk their own lives to help too.

So please be careful, your actions affect more than just yourself.

Waterfalls

There are some gorgeous waterfalls to check out on your Albanian road trip in Malesia e Madhe. Many won’t be marked on google maps, so you’ll probably happen upon some as you explore.

There are a few marked though:

• Ujëvara e Selcës
• Ujevara e Lepushës 
• Ujëvara e Gjanve (near Vermosh)
• Ujevara e Bashkimit (near Vermosh)

Ujëvara means waterfall, so look for signs that have that word.

It also depends on when you’re visiting. If you’re there during the height of summer or directly after (July, August, September), the waterfalls will be pretty dry. Spring is the best time for them.

2. How Long Will It Take

From the city center of Shkoder to the end of SH20 in the mountain village of Vermosh, is said to be a two-hour drive of about 96km.

If you’re coming from Podgorica, it is listed as the same time, but 87km, plus there is a border crossing which will add time.

Coming from the city center of Tirana, it is 3 hours 40 mins and 200km, though the road from Tirana to Shkoder is known to have a lot of traffic, especially in the summer, so it might be longer.

These are just the estimates from google maps. In reality, even without traffic and border crossings, this drive will take you longer as it’s going over some steep mountains.

You can expect many hairpin turns from the mountain passes, as well as winding roads even when you’re driving in the valley along the Cemi River.

Plus if you factor in stopping at viewpoints, swimming, hiking, a picnic, etc., it will be much longer.

It is possible to do this as a day trip from Shkoder, as long as you don’t mind lots of driving.

I wouldn’t recommend doing it as a day trip from Tirana or Podgorica though with traffic and the border crossings could take a while (they don’t always).

Instead of trying to smush it all into one day, I’d recommend you stay overnight to take your time and enjoy Malesia e Madhe.

3. Where To Stay In Malesia e Madhe

Northern Albania is known for its traditions and hospitality, and you can see that with the number of guesthouses you’ll find.

When visiting the mountains, it’s the main type of accommodation. Of course, there are some fancy places, like this luxury resort in Boge. It’s located on the road to Theth and it’s perfect if you want to treat yourself or have a romantic weekend.

Though visiting Malesia e Madhe isn’t promoted a lot on international travel mediums, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t popular.

Albanians love to visit this area, especially ones that have emigrated away but come back every year for a summer holiday.

If you’re visiting from the middle of July to early September, you will need to arrange accommodation before. Here are some different options for you – I’ve arranged them by village.

Many guesthouses might only have 1-2 rooms so I’ve listed a few for each place so you can check on availability.

Tamare

Tamare is a place that has more of a small village vibe, with many guesthouses grouped close together. 

• Guesthouse Rireyiana, Sofra Kelmendit, and Te Gusti Hotel

Selce

Selce as a village is more spread out, so it feels a little more remote. It also doesn’t have as many options for accommodation, but it’s great if you’re looking for peace and quiet.

• Stay in a triangle-shaped cabin or the Turi-Selce guesthouse

Lepushe

Lepushe is the 2nd to last village you reach on SH20 before getting to the border with Montenegro. It’s known as the pearl of the Albanian Alps.

Though many people rush to Theth Village since it’s been promoted heavily, Lepushe is a really beautiful destination that is a great alternative.

• Guesthouse Alpini (they also have fancier private villas here that are perfect for a romantic weekend)
• Bujtina Tradicionale or Hotel Kelmendi – though it’s located off on a smaller road that might not be as accessible, talk with the host before booking

Vermosh

Vermosh is the last village you can reach on SH20 before the border with Montenegro. It’s another super area with lots of hiking and waterfalls to see. 

• Peraj Guesthouse or Hotel Vermoshi TDC
• Columbus Villas (probably the most luxurious place to stay in this region, great for a romantic getaway)

4. Where To Rent A Car

If you’re planning to start this road trip from Shkoder, it’s important to know how to get a rental car. Check out my full guide on day trips from Shkoder!

I have gone around and talked with many of the places that rent cars in Shkoder city center. You’ll recognize them because they have signs that say makina me qera which means car for rent.

What most quote you will be 25 euro per day for manual and 35 euro per day for automatic (it will be much higher in July and August).

This is without insurance though. When you ask about insurance, prices that they tell you (or make up on the spot) will vary.

One place that seemed more honest told me that none of these small places can offer you insurance, they just say there is insurance but there really isn’t any.

The only success I seemed to find was at GoRent Albania – Shkoder location. Since they are a branch of a larger company, it seems like they offer legitimate insurance.

The only thing not covered is the bottom of the car, which they tell you upfront about. You can also use a credit card to do the deposit (or 300 euro in cash) and you can pay by card as well.

Unfortunately, since it is a small branch, they might not have any cars available in the height of summer. You can contact them in advance though to reserve.

Since they are the only company in Shkoder I feel comfortable recommending, if they don’t have cars, I’d say to just rent from Tirana airport.

There are bigger companies that will have plenty of availability and legitimate insurance coverage.

5. More Important Things To Know For Your Albania Road Trip

Doing an Albanian road trip in Malesia e Madhe will undoubtedly be beautiful and fun, but there are important things to know.

Earlier in the hiking section I touched on how remote the area is, and how important safety is while hiking. Beyond that, there is still a need to be cautious.

Fuel Availability 

Since it is very remote, there are no gas (petrol) stations after you turn off the larger E762 road onto SH20.

You need to make sure to have a full tank of gas, especially if you plan on going all the way to Vermosh or if you are staying in the area for a few days.

Check how much your tank holds, as some can be quite small. You might need to take some reserve fuel.

Food Availability

The same warning goes for food. Guest houses usually provide food along with the lodgings, especially breakfast.

For some, meals might not be included so you will have to pay extra, or purchase food there, but don’t expect a big supply since it is remote.

To be safe, I’d suggest bringing along some snacks at least. If you’re strict on being a vegetarian or vegan, I’d say to bring food supplies as mountain food usually includes meat and dairy products (even indirectly like broth for soup).

Cash / ATMs

Albania is largely a cash society, even in bigger cities. You can expect to pay everything in cash in this region. If there aren’t gas stations, that should tell you how remote it is, so don’t expect card machines.

You should be able to pay in both Euro and Albanian Lek, but it will be easier to purchase small items with LEK like coffee and food.

If you use a large 50 euro bill to pay for coffee, you might not get the best exchange rate from the waiter. Paying for larger things like your accommodation is good to pay in euro (if you prefer).

Either way, make sure to visit an ATM in Shkoder or Tirana to withdraw enough money for fuel, food, and accommodation. Use the yellow and blue ATMs (Credins Bank) for free cash withdrawals in Albania.

Easier Albanian Road Trip Alternatives

Though I’d highly recommend doing an Albanian road trip, especially this specific one I’m suggesting, I know it might not suit everyone.

If you don’t feel comfortable driving or maybe you don’t want to go through the hassle of arranging a rental car, here are some alternative tours.

Hopefully, these can still give you a nice taste of what this region holds.

Due to the stunning mountains and waterfalls, it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in Albania. Just a few years ago Theth village was still a sleepy small settlement in the Albanian Alps.

Now it has really expanded, to the point where it can be hard to find accommodation in the summer. Here are 4 reasons to consider staying somewhere besides Theth Albania on your trip.

Northern Albania Is More Than Just Theth Village

If you’ve read any popular blog, you’ve probably run across the advice to hike from Valbona to Theth (or vice versa) in the Albanian Alps.

This might seem a little harsh but, most of the time this is recommended because it’s the only place/area where the person writing the blog went.

Due to this, more people come and visit and then they also write about it. It kind of snowballs.

Before starting my own travel blog, I was naive to the fact that many travel bloggers recommend places simply because they didn’t want or have time to visit anywhere else.

When I was volunteering at a hostel in Shkoder, Albania, I met many travelers who acted like they could check northern Albania off their bucket list because they took the Koman ferry and did the famous Valbona to Theth hike.

No, I’m not saying you shouldn’t visit Theth and Valbona – they are absolutely gorgeous.

But I do want to show that there is a lot more to northern Albania than these places. This is why I’ve come up with some good alternatives to Theth village for you. If you do want to visit, check the Shkoder bus schedule for more info.

High Season In Theth Village

If you’re familiar with travel, you’ll know high and low season refers to how busy a certain destination or landmark gets.

Usually better weather means more tourists, so summer is often the highest point for places. Theth village is no different.

The whole of Albania comes alive in the summer, but there are some hot spots like the Albanian Riviera and Theth National Park.

In the last 5 years, Theth has exploded in tourism. Each year there are more and more people visiting.

If you’ve read a blog saying that Theth is peaceful, they probably visited a while ago because that’s just not the case anymore. They keep building more and more guest houses to fill the need.

When I was volunteering at the hostel, we had to keep telling people that there was no accommodation in Theth, and that literally every bed was taken every night.

Now if you are still set on visiting Theth, you can always book early or try to go in the shoulder seasons May/June or late September.

The mountains have extreme weather so the guest houses usually only operate around May – September. Some recommendations for staying in Theth.

• Solo budget travelers: Guest House Rrashkadoli or Shpella Guesthouse
• Budget rooms for couples or friends: Rupa Guest House or Bujtina Terthorja
• Perfect for a romantic getaway: Bujtina Miqesia

Higher Costs In Theth Village

Because a lot of the cheaper guest houses get booked quickly, you might find prices to be quite high if you’re on a budget.

On my first trip to Albania many years ago, I didn’t book anything which I laugh thinking about now.

All I did was show up at Theth village and called the number of some guy that was given to me. He didn’t answer so I showed someone his name and number and they pointed me in the right direction.

If you’re looking for accommodation in Theth village and can’t find vacancies or any options in your price range, it could be a good idea to consider alternative destinations.

Supporting Locals In Other Areas

Since Theth village has seen a huge influx of tourists, it has resulted in more tourism money going to locals.

This is great to see, but there are also a lot of other similar areas that could do with a tourism boost.

3 Great Alternatives To Theth Albania

There are a lot of great alternatives to staying in the Theth village. Many have beautiful hotels and quaint guesthouses. Here are a few suggestions to look into.

Razma / Razëm

The small village of Razem is the closest option to Shkoder. It’s about an hour’s drive, 42km from the city center, following SH21.

It’s also known as the road to Theth – yes that’s the name translated from Albanian (Rruge per Thethe). This small village has some cute hotels with restaurants. Most people enjoy hiking and cycling there.

If you stay at Hotel Kulla e Arte, you also have access to table tennis, their garden, an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, a sauna, and a hot tub. After a long day of hiking, a hot tub would be divine.

Boga / Bogë

If you keep following the Rruge per Thethe, you’ll come to the small village of Boge. It’s about an hour’s drive (47km) from Shkoder city center.

The drive itself is gorgeous but the village also has amazing views from the guest houses. There’s a lovely budget guesthouse with bungalows Boga Alpine Resort and an amazing, luxury resort, Hotel Kulla e Bajraktarit.

Vermosh / Lëpushë

The village of Vermosh is located at the northernmost point of Albania, very close to the Montenegrin border. Just like Theth village, Vermosh is surrounded by mountains so there’s plenty of hiking to be done.

There are also some nearby waterfalls to explore. For a budget stay, check out Peraj Guesthouse. On the road before Vermosh, there’s a similar village called Lëpushë that would be nice to stay in.

Guesthouse Alpini is a good budget option for Lëpushë village. To reach Vermosh and Lëpushë, it’s about a 2-hour drive (96 km) from Shkoder city center.

If you’d prefer not to go so far, you can still follow SH20 and stay at Selca Cem in the village of Selcë which still is a beautiful area to stay in.
