As I was reminiscing after my latest trip to Koman Lake and 5 Stinet, I wrote these words in my journal.

“During the last light on Koman Lake, it feels like escaping, no routines, no stress. The brilliant stars and the silence at night remind you what it means to be human again.”

Some people have tight Albania itineraries, so even if you can’t make it for an overnight stay, make sure to do the kayaking day trip on Koman Lake – you won’t regret it.

Luxury In The Middle Of Nowhere?!

I’ll include photos throughout the article, so you can see for yourself how dreamy 5 Stinet – definitely one of the top accommodations in northern Albania. Being right on the lake and waking up to these views is priceless, seriously. I had to pinch myself a little bit and my friend had to drag me to the boat when it was time to leave.. not really, but you get the point.

There are some nice touches, like the embroidered towels and bathrobes, which are super cozy.

Of course, breakfast is also included, even though I was so full from dinner, I still managed. My Albanian friend said this,

“Best hotel breakfast I’ve had in all of Albania”

Some high praise right there!

It’s fair to mention, there is no road access to 5 Stinet. Everything comes in and out by boat, and also a 2-hour road journey from Koman to Shkoder (or longer to Tirana). This means you’re getting a great family-run accommodation in a remote region, so it’s not like you can compare it to hotels in major cities.

Organic, Traditional Mountain Cuisine

One of the best rules to follow in Albania – leaving the city means you will find the best traditional Albanian food. Deep in the Albanian Alps, you will find some of the best cheese (and other dairy products), honey, grilled meats and fish, etc.

I was really impressed with the food served at 5 Stinet. I have eaten at other guest houses on Lake Koman, so I do have some authority to say it’s the best I’ve tried, especially with reasonable prices. The guest houses in Shala River charge way more for low-quality / small portions.

Here are a few suggestions for your order:

• House wine – If you drink alcohol, try 5 Stinet’s home-made wine, it is very good.
• Grilled pork – We had a mix meat platter, and they were all good, but this was my favorite by far.
• Salce Kosi – A traditional strained yogurt sauce, it’s a dip that goes with everything. The one at 5 Stinet is one of my favorites I’ve ever tried.
• 5 Stinet Salad – With this house salad, you’re getting a colorful mix of greens, different cheeses, and fruits. 

Underrated For Summer

If you’re like me, you hate extreme heat, and Albania always gets hit with a heat wave in the summer. At 5 Stinet, it was perfect because the mountains make it a bit cooler, just enough to be able to enjoy being outside still.

Plus, the hotel is located right on the water, so at any time you can go for a swim, go kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding. While everyone heads to crowded beaches, it’s easy to find peace on Koman Lake. 

Mix Of Tradition, Beauty, Adventure

Tradition – Northern Albania has its own distinct cultural markers, one of the most obvious being the Gheg dialect of the Albanian language being spoken. The mountains where 5 Stinet resides are also known for having the last tribal system in Europe, strongly survived into the 20th century. The whole region is steeped in history and can be really interesting to learn about. You can read more about these accounts in Robert Elsie’s The Tribes of Albania – History, Society and Culture.

Though you might not see obvious signs of the tribes, trust me, it remains. One example is that most businesses in Albania are family-run. 5 Stinet is no different. All of the employees are uncles, cousins, etc. so don’t be surprised if you meet many people with the same last name. In a world of globalization, this is so rare. Also, when I was there, it was obvious that the staff work very hard all day to make it a nice experience for you, so make sure to be kind.

Beauty – A great part of staying at 5 Stinet is that you can still fit a trip into the famous Lumi i Shales (Shala River). I’ve visited a few times and it is worth the hype – such a unique place that you can’t miss.

Unfortunately, it’s not so peaceful since many guesthouses/restaurants play loud party music. Instead of staying there overnight, I’d suggest staying at 5 Stinet and then taking the daily 10 AM boat that goes to Shala River. After a few hours, you can return to the hotel or to the Koman ferry terminal.

Adventure – One of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of Koman Lake is by kayaking. 5 Stinet has kayaks for rent for guests (10 euro), which I would highly recommend taking advantage of.

“As a beginner, I was apprehensive about being on the water. Then, after learning the paddle functions, I became more confident. Being in the middle of Koman Lake, with the sun and calmness of the water, it turned out to be such an adventure. Soon we wanted to upgrade to stand-up paddle boarding, which was even easier (if you sit or are on your knees)!”- Adelina

Since this was her first time swimming in a lake and trying kayaking, getting to share this time with my best friend was priceless.

First Impressions (Literally)

Do you ever just have those moments that stop you dead in your tracks, and you think:

“so this is what it means to be human”

“this is what it means to be alive”

… suddenly all the hardships that have come before don’t seem so bothersome because now you’re in this exact moment. Now it has all been worth it.

Whatever sparks this in you is the key to life – keep that protected and tucked away for a rainy day. 

Back in 2019, I had one of these moments during my biggest solo trip to date in Europe. I spent one month traveling alone for the first time, in many countries that people warned me to avoid. Thankfully, the cheesy Facebook videos about Albania’s culture left me undeterred from these negative Nancys.

Deep in the north of Albania, I decided to take the ferry. This was before Albania was a trending destination, so I felt brave and adventurous as I sat at the front of the ferry watching the insane lake views. I remember looking to my right and seeing these little cabins perched on a hillside and thinking, “how epic would it be to stay there”.

Oh, how funny the universe is, because six years later, I would have a website specifically dedicated to northern Albania, and that same hotel would ask me to stay with them! Talk about coming full circle..

Anyway, I hope this gives you an idea of the impact this beautiful place has had on me. I can’t promise that you’ll have the same spiritual experience, but it can’t hurt to try.

With no road access, everything arrives by boat, but that remoteness is exactly what makes it stand out. The food is some of the best I’ve had in the region, and the cooler mountain air makes summer far more enjoyable than Albania’s crowded beaches. 5 Stinet is easily one of the best places to experience the magic of Koman Lake. I hope you love it as much as I did.

If you’re like me, before moving to Europe, I had no idea what Agroturism meant! Maybe this is because I grew up in a rural area, so the idea of being out in nature, growing your own food, and being around animals isn’t such a foreign concept.

On the other hand, many who grow up in urban centers don’t have these opportunities, which has created a surge in popularity for farm stays (also known as agrotourism). 

Agrotourism in Albania means connecting with the country’s rural soul—staying in family-run farmhouses/guesthouses, tasting homemade raki, helping with seasonal harvests and animal care, along with experiencing traditions passed down through generations.

What makes agrotourism so special is that each stay is unique in its own right – a French farm stay will be vastly different than an Albanian agrotourism experience. From the calming natural environments, organic food specialization, and rich cultural aspects, there’s always a reason to sign up for another agrotourism stay.

The Ultimate Albanian Agrotourism Experience – Lulebore Guesthouse

This traditional Albanian food varies greatly from what you can find in restaurants around the country since it is all sourced from their own produce. Here are a few traditional foods that you can try during your Albanian agrotourism stay.

Ferliku

Ferliku is made by slow-roasting an entire pig/goat/lamb over an open fire on a spit. This usually signifies a special occasion and is a ritual of hospitality – the process can take hours, and guests are often invited to watch and share stories.

Qervish

Qervish is a hearty village dish, typically made with cornmeal and tender pieces of lamb or goat, slow-cooked until it reaches a porridge-like consistency. This is the comforting type of meal that follows a long day of hiking or farm activities.

Supë Me Hithra

Supë me hithra (stinging nettle soup) is made from foraged stinging nettles, often cooked with rice, onions, and a touch of olive oil. It’s especially popular in spring, when the young nettle leaves are fresh, and is known for its nutritional benefits.

Fli

Fli is a bit more well-known and can be found in some restaurants, but of course, homemade will always be supreme! It is made by layering thin crepes of batter and slowly baking them over hot coals for hours. Fli is usually prepared by women in rural homes, especially in the north.

Learning Farming Practices

On the farm, there is a wide range of activities available that all need to be done, regardless of whether you and your group are present or not. This is the great part – the activities are not simply being done to entertain tourists, but out of necessity for the family’s well-being. 

From learning how to make cheese and milk cows to even making honey, there’s something that will be of interest for everyone. There’s also learning how to make Raki, a traditional clear alcohol made from fruit in the Balkan region of Europe.

One of the most common is from grapes, though Lulebore does plumb too. You’ll also get to feed the chickens and ducks, and pick fresh eggs straight from the nest for breakfast! Depending on the season, some fruit picking will be involved too – wild pomegranates, cherries, apples, plums, and figs.

Adventure Activities

While you might be wondering, what can you do so deep in the wilderness? Don’t worry Lulebore has you covered! There are plenty of easy walks to do, cool places to see in the 4X4 vehicle, and even some horse trekking.

If you’re lucky, you might see wild horses or see the Upupa Comune and Woodpeckers while birdwatching. As the light fades and the village house lights slowly turn out, there is an overwhelming silence.

Even at night time, there’s still some adventure with your guide, like looking through the telescope, listening for the croaks of frogs and the distant calls of owls and other night birds.

Accommodation at Lulebore Agrotourism

An agrotourism experience in Albania isn’t about luxury but authenticity. By only having 4 rooms, the guesthouse keeps the historical integrity and limits overdevelopment in the area, which has become a serious issue in other destinations in Albania.

The setting is extremely peaceful, with just a few wolf howls now and then. Rooms are a bit rustic but serve their purpose. There is one shared bathroom per floor, so it’s shared between 4 to 5 people.

Why Visit Komani Lake?

Komani Lake is known as one of Albania’s most breathtaking natural attractions, often compared to Scandinavian fjords, though it is actually a man-made reservoir that spans 34km.

Lake Koman has been praised by travel guides for many years, which means it is far from a “hidden gem”, though this doesn’t mean it isn’t worth visiting Lake Komani.In terms of transport within northern Albania, it is a significant gateway, opening up the Albanian Alps and the renowned Valbona-Theth hiking trip.

Why The Nickname “Thailand Of Albania”?

When avid world travelers started venturing deeper into the Albanian wilderness, many couldn’t help comparing it to the tropics of Asia. Now in our modern age, we have tourists who have seen many far-apart continents and nations.

This used to not be the case. Of course, there were individual outsiders coming to northern Albania for the last 500 years – I’m talking about religious persons, researchers, and adventure seekers. You can read more about these accounts in Robert Elsie’s The Tribes of Albania – History, Society and Culture. A very interesting book worth your time – I’m working my way through it now.

Currently, we are at a unique point in history due to globalization. For decades, Albania was shielded from this sense of rapid homogeneous evolution towards technology, which has created a distinct culture compared with its European neighbors.

This extends to these remote parts of the Albanian Alps, which have been known by locals for centuries, yet new to foreigners. These fresh eyes differ from the previous adventure seekers who came a few hundred years ago, since they didn’t have the same opportunities that modern travelers have today. 

To be precise, it is not Komani Lake that necessarily resembles Thailand since it is a deep, man-made reservoir. Thus, the color of the water tends to be darker. The place that has sparked so much interest is a tributary flowing into the giant Lake Koman, which is named Shala River (Lumi i Shales in Albanian).

It is a canyon with high walls, lush vegetation, and crystal clear water that remains icy all year round. Its color is a mix of turquoise and baby blue, giving a striking contrast to the tropical green mountain sides. Check out my full Lumi i Shales video here!

How To Get To Komani Lake By Bus

From Shkoder: Approximately 2 hours by minibus, departing around 6:30 AM from Hotel Rozafa. You can check the bus tickets here. From Tirana: Around 3.5 hours by minibus, with departures near Zogu i Zi roundabout at 4:50 AM. 

Driving To Komani Lake

While driving yourself is possible, be cautious of narrow and winding roads. There are also an insane number of potholes, so driving slowly is crucial – it might not be the best to take a low-riding rental car.

Hopefully, they will renovate or completely replace it soon. Check the Tirana Airport car rental options. I always recommend renting there because you can get better, full coverage insurance. It’s also advisable to reserve ferry tickets in advance if bringing a vehicle.

Komani Lake Ferry – What To Expect

• Duration: The ferry journey from Koman to Fierze takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. 
• Operators: Berisha Ferry, Alpin, and Rozafa Ferry are the main service providers. 
• Ticket Prices: Range from €8 to €10 for passengers; additional fees apply for vehicles and bicycles. 
• Booking: Tickets can be reserved online via the operators’ websites or paid in cash upon boarding.

On The Komani Lake Ferry Ride

• Scenic Views: Towering mountains, narrow gorges, and turquoise waters throughout the journey.
• Onboard Amenities: Some ferries offer multiple decks, while some are smaller. There is indoor seating and open-air areas; some have small cafes. There are also cafes before you get on the ferry, so buy an espresso if you’d like to use the toilet.

Best Komani Lake Tours / Things To Do

• Shala River: Known as the “pearl of Koman,” this river boasts crystal-clear waters and dramatic cliffs, accessible via boat tours. Check out the specific Shala River day trips here.

Where To stay At Lake Komani?

All three, Riverside Komani Lake, 5 Stinet and Bujtina Adora, are further along Lake Komani. They have beautiful surroundings and are very popular. If you are on a budget, check out some of the guest houses in the actual village of Koman before the ferry terminal.

There’s also an amazing property in the village called Koman Paradise by Romina that would be perfect for a romantic getaway.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Komani Lake?

• Season: Late spring to early autumn (April to October) offers the best weather and ferry availability. Ferry season runs from April–early November.
• Weekdays: This is one of the most popular places in all of Albania, so no matter what day you go it will be busy. During the high season, going on a weekday might help with this slightly.

Practical Tips For “Thailand Of Albania”

Planning a trip to Komani Lake isn’t difficult, but it’s worth knowing a few practical tips to make the most of your adventure. From what to pack and how early to arrive, to ferry reservations and safety guidelines, this section covers the essentials.

What should I pack for Komani Lake?

1. Clothing – Bring layers, as mornings can be chilly, and the ferry can be windy. I’d also recommend nice hiking sandals like Chacos, because you will need a versatile shoe for all the outdoor activities.
2. Snacks and plenty of water!
3. Swimwear, towel, sunscreen, change of clothes for after the water activities

How early should I arrive at the Lake Koman ferry terminal?

• Passengers: at least 15 minutes early; vehicles: 30 minutes early
• For reservations, book ferry tickets in advance, especially if traveling with a vehicle, to ensure availability.

Can I bring a car or bike on the Komani Lake ferry?

• Yes—cars, bikes, and motorcycles can be transported, but a reservation is required, and space is limited
• How much does it cost? – pricing can change, but usually 7 € for cars, 10 € for bikes, and 20–25 € for motorcycles

Is Lake Komani safe?

Albania is generally safe for tourists; however, always take standard travel precautions. If you want to know more, you can read about living and safety in northern Albania.

• Don’t jump from the ferry
• Supervise children
• Use life jackets
• Keep 112 number handy in case of an emergency
• Bring your trash back or use bins onboard—litter is an issue in the area

Dark Side Of Lake Komani

Like so many travel destinations we see on social media, Lake Komani is no different. It is not perfect by any means. For starters, many businesses that operate are not legal, and at one point, the government sent police to shut down everything happening at the Lake Koman ferry terminal.

This halted all traffic transport – remember, people take cars, motorcycles, and vans on the ferry to save many hours of driving. Of course, this meant tourists who paid for day trips or multi-day excursions to Koman or Shala River were stranded, with no recourse.

This ban on Lake Koman didn’t last long, though. I’m sure lots of cash was exchanged behind the scenes, and full operations opened up again. And to everyone’s relief, since many people rely on tourism to support their families throughout the off-season as well.

Lake Komani Pollution Reality

As someone who has been living in Albania for years (and has traveled to many underdeveloped countries), I don’t find trash pollution to be shocking. I guess we can chalk this up to desensitization. PS, this also works the opposite way too. Now I have become way more sensitized to crime.

Since we have super-low crime and harassment rates in Albania, this is what I am used to. This is the safest place I have traveled to/lived! When I hear about a local kidnapping or murder, I am so shocked because it is rare. Compared to how I grew up (America), this is so different. Kidnapping, school shootings, terrorism? Oh that’s nothing!

Anytime I have been on the Komani Lake ferry or the Shala River boat, I have always heard foreign tourists showing visible disgust and dismay for the floating trash. In my mind, I saw it, and I did think it was sad, but I definitely didn’t have the same outrage that they showed.

So all of this to say, it depends on your background. If you’re from a Western country, you may be shocked by the trash in Albania. I say this so you can set your expectations accordingly. 

PSsst you shouldn't drink the tap water in *most* places in Albania. I suggest purchasing a filter water bottle to limit single use plastic.

FAQs For Lake Komani

Still have questions before your trip? Komani Lake is stunning but also remote.. Below are answers to some of the most common questions travelers ask, from transportation and swimming spots to where you can stay overnight.

How to get to Komani Lake from Shkoder?

Take the SH25 road heading east from Shkodër through Vau i Dejës and follow the route along the Drin River toward Koman. The total distance is about 55 km, but due to winding mountain terrain and rough conditions, expect the drive to take around 1½–2 hours by car or minibus. Shared minibuses depart from Sheshi Demokracia around 6:30 AM to align with the 9 AM ferry schedule.

How to get to Komani Lake from Tirana?

From Tirana, follow the SH1 motorway (or A3 to join SH1) north to Shkodër (~100 km), then head east on SH25 to Koman. The total drive is approximately 134 km. Although Google Maps may suggest around 3 hours, the realistic travel time is closer to 4 hours because of the slower mountain segment after Shkodër.

Shared minibuses leave from Gazheli Petrol Station near Zogu i Zi at around 5 AM, aiming to reach the Koman terminal by 8:30–9 AM.

PSsst Public transport is chaotic. It doesn't work well if you have a short amount of time in Albania so I'd highly recommend renting a car. Compare the best deals on Tirana car rentals.

Can you go swimming in Lake Komani?

Yes, you can go swimming in Lake Komani but in specific areas. The important thing to remember that Komani Lake is a lot more than a tourist destination. It has a hydroelectric power station and an important mode of transport for goods and locals alike.

The best option is to ask you accommodation or cafe nearby if they know of a suitable swimming spon on Lake Komani. If you are near the village of Koman, you can go to Yama Beach. Also, beware that is a trash pollution problem and it might not be enjoyable or safe – though this is dependant on the weather, water levels, and recent clean up activity.

Can you go camping at Komani Lake?

Yes, you can go camping at Lake Komani. There are some guest houses that will accept small payments for you to camp there, which gives access to fresh water and electricity. Check out “Camping Komani” and “Serenity Camping”.

Are there any hostels at Lake Komani?

No, unfortunately there aren’t any hostels near Lake Komani. If you’re on a budget, the best bet is to go camping at Komani Lake or to stay at a guest house. 7 Reasons To Visit Prekal Canyon, Shkoder (Kanione Prekal)

One of the best and simultaneously worst things about northern Albania is that there’s not so much information about destinations to visit. Now that doesn’t mean that they aren’t out there, more so that only locals know about them.

This is great because you can still find amazing spots and have them all to yourself to enjoy. But of course, the challenge is finding them, which is difficult if you aren’t slow traveling / have a set time for your visit.

Since most people fall into this category, I want to save you a few steps by sharing the wonderful area of Kiri River (Lumi i Kiri) and Prekal Canyon (Kanione Prekal), near Shkoder, Albania. Here are 7 reasons you can’t miss visiting Kanione Prekal on your trip to northern Albania!

1. Much Less Touristy

Nowadays, so many people make their travel plans based on places they see on social media. Usually, if the places are already being shown, they aren’t undiscovered, “hidden gems”. Keep your expectations accordingly.

While most tourists that come to the north go to Theth village and Shala River, which are still beautiful and amazing to see, you can visit Kiri River and Prekal Canyon for a much quieter but still stunning adventure.

Usually, it is mostly locals that go to Kanione Prekal to swim and cool off in the summer months. You’ll also see a few hostels that do day trips there, but for the most part, it has escaped the international tourist’s eyes (so far). You can book a tour to explore Prekal Canyon ahead of time here.

2. Unique Biosphere

I still remember the first time I visited Prekal – the feeling of awe taking in the sharp mountains rising up on either side and covered in lush greenery. Driving deeper into the canyon, you see small houses and farms perched on the hillside with tiered farming slots, similar to the style you see in Asia.

There are pointy hay stacks and different produce being grown, somehow still feeling very vibrant even in the driest months of July, August and September. To me, Prekal Canyon is a little oasis to escape to, where you can be immersed and relax, even during the scorching days of summer heat in southern Europe.

There’s a magic to this place that is hard to describe and no matter how many times I return, it’s ever-present. There is folklore in Albania, specifically in the mountainous regions – maybe this is what I’m feeling. You’ll have to visit Kanione Prekal and experience it yourself to see!

Fair warning – like many places in the Balkans, there is a level of trash pollution. So set your expectations accordingly and remember to take away any of your own litter.

3. Different Seasons

Timing is everything. Like most places, when you decide to visit will impact how the place presents itself to you. Kiri River is no different. As I just mentioned, the valley/canyon of Prekal remains quite lush even during the insane summer heat.

The water levels drastically decrease though. There is always enough to still swim and also cliff jumping. In the winter the trees will be more bare and there are harsh storms and lots of rain, so visiting during these months will mean that the water is fast and churning – not always safe to swim in depending on the area.

It is still beautiful to explore though, so don’t write it off. In the spring, Prekal Canyon and village will be at its most green, blossoming with new life. Snow is melting from the deeper parts of the mountainous region, being swept down the Kiri River to Prekal Canyon.

Heavy rains continue into spring, so the water levels can be high and unpredictable. It will be warmer to swim, but just take caution as the water can be fast-flowing and therefore perilous.

4. Free Adrenaline Boost

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or want to push your boundaries, Prekal Canyon is the place for you. There are a lot of opportunities for jumping from various heights into the water.

This cliff jumping makes the time to visit Kiri River so much more fun than a normal swim spot if I’m being honest. Even if you don’t want to jump yourself, you can watch others, which can be just as entertaining. Plus, there are many spots where you can get into the water to swim without jumping too. 

Of course, I don’t want anyone to be hurt so I want to advocate that you NEED to be careful if you are not familiar with Kanione Prekal. Water levels can change so it might be hard to say how safe a jump is because of the water depth.

If there are locals around, you can ask their advice or watch where they jump and how they do it. Always err on the side of caution, especially since many parts of the Kiri River do not have cell phone reception, which I will talk more about in the safety section.

5. Lots To Explore Along Kanione Prekal – Many Places To Stop

One of the best things about visiting Kanione Prekal (Prekal Canyon) is that you can find places just for you! As you drive along the Kiri River, you’ll see many places you can pull over to stop.

There are endless exploring options, and that’s part of the fun of visiting Lumi i Kiri. Of course, I have some favorite spots but I’ll keep them under wraps for now. If I give away all the secrets, these hidden spots won’t be so hidden anymore. Happy exploring though!

6. There’s An Epic Cave In Prekal Canyon

Don’t fear – I’m not so mean, I won’t keep everything from you! While exploring Kanione Prekal, don’t get sidetracked by all of the cool places to swim at the beginning of Lumi i Kiri. There’s plenty more to see as you keep driving.

Once you reach the small Prekal Village, you’ll know you’re in the right spot for seeing the cave. It is named Shpella e Zhyles on Google Maps. Sometimes there is a river or some level of water in the cave, so if you want to go in, your feet might need to get wet – and the water is freezing!

It is worth going in to explore, you can see some sparkly substance on the wall inside – I like to pretend its gold. When visiting, remember to leave it better than you found it – no trash, please. 

7. Proximity to Shkoder City

If you are based in Shkoder, you have a great advantage to see so many amazing places in the north of Albania – especially the Accursed Mountains and the Albanian Highlands.

Doing day trips from Shkoder to these places is great but involved a lot of driving. Prekal Canyon is amazing because of how close it is to Shkoder! The proximity doesn’t negate the dramatic scenery or the tranquility you feel along the Kiri River.

How To Get To Kiri River / Prekal Canyon, Shkoder

Head out of Shkoder city, towards the village of Hot i Ri and Mesi Bridge. Turn left on the fork in Mesi Village to the road called “Rruga Mesit Postribe”. Keep following this road along Lumi i Kiri (Kiri River) until you find places where you’d like to stop.

Road Quality Along Kanione Prekal

As far as roads in Albania go, the one named “Rruga Mesit Postribe” is pretty well maintained and paved. It is narrow, so it might be a bit difficult for larger vehicles (like those doing van life) to make their way.

This is especially true because of the traffic, when other cars are oncoming, you’ll need to both squeeze by, which can be tricky and intimidating for some. Make sure to read my guide on renting a car in Shkoder – especially if you’re planning on doing an epic north albania road trip!

Safety In Kiri River & Prekal Canyon

In general, Albania is very safe for tourists. If you’re basing yourself in the north, feel free to check out my safety guide for Shkoder here. Going along Kiri River and Prekal Canyon, is no different. People are friendly and welcoming.

The more serious safety issue is when you are exploring. You should be careful where you step, and watch out for snakes too. The water snakes should be harmless and non-venomous, but still good to be vigilant.

Like I mentioned before, you should take caution about cliff jumping and water conditions. After a certain part of Kanione Prekal, there is no cell phone reception, which is also why I urge you to be more cautious. If something does happen and there’s no one around (like in the winter) it could be very bad. 

Kiri River Accommodation Options – Where To Stay In Prekal Canyon

There are not so many options for proper accommodation. In Prekal village, there is a guesthouse but it says it’s closed on Booking. There seem to be plenty of designated camping spots though, all along Prekal Canyon.

Final Thoughts On Kanione Prekal 

Prekal Canyon is a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and tranquility, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring northern Albania. Its relatively unknown status means you can enjoy stunning landscapes and thrilling activities without the usual tourist crowds.

From the unique biosphere that feels like a hidden oasis to the adrenaline-pumping cliff jumps and endless spots to explore, it’s easy to see why Kanione Prekal is one of my favorite swimming spots!

What To Know About Museums In Albania

If you know anything about this small Balkan country, you’ll know that this is Albania was shut off from the rest of the world for almost half a century. To make it more intense, this was while the rest of the world was taking off in development and technology.

In many ways, visiting Albania can still give you a glimpse into the past (in some places). Due to this lack of growth and outside influence, you might find that some things are “lacking”.

For example, some important historical parts of Albania weren’t preserved. Many things are still intact but aren’t being taken care of or there’s no information for tourists. It is slowly getting better though!

Best Museums In Tirana

So even though the whole country is chock full of layers and layers of super intriguing and important history, it’s not being shown properly. This is why I always suggest that people visit Tirana because some of the best museums in Albania are there.

And since this country has such a complicated past that still dictates how things are today, it’s good to learn from these museums in Tirana before exploring the rest of Albania.

Some of the best museums in Tirana are the National History Museum, the Museum of Secret Surveillance (also known as the House of Leaves) and both Bunk Art 1 and Bunk Art 2 museums. Let me give you a brief overview so you can decide for yourself, especially if you have limited time in Albania’s capital.

Besides Bunk Art 1, all of these museums are close together so you’ll have no problem walking to each. Though the history can be a bit heavy so fitting them all in one day is up to you!

1. National History Museum

I don’t want to say for certain, but it seems like the National History Museum is one of the largest in Albania. There is a lot to get through – it has a huge variety of history to take in.

Everything from ancient up until modern day. I’d highly recommend visiting as it will give you more context about Albania, and also you get see quite a bit for the ticket price. Even on the outside, there is a gorgeous, massive mosaic mural depicting Albanian figures.

It’s located in the main square of the Tirana – Skanderbeg Square so you won’t miss it for sure when you are there. 

2. Museum of Secret Surveillance

One of the times I visited, I stayed at an amazing hostel in Tirana (read my full guide) or if you want to check it directly – Vanilla Sky Hostel. The reception recommended I stop by the Museum of Secret Surveillance, also known as the House of Leaves Museum.

It didn’t disappoint! If you know me, you know I love museums and it makes it so much better when the museum is housed in a significant building about the history it displays. The building of the House of Leaves makes it even more interesting.

Originally, it was a maternity ward before Albania’s dictator, Enver Hoxha, turned it into his spy center for both Albanians and the very few visitors that were allowed into Albania during this time. The equipment that was used and the level of surveillance was insane – you’ll need to check it out for yourself.

3. Bunk Art 2

Right in the heart of Tirana, close to Skanderbeg Square, you can find Bunk Art 2 which is a nuclear bunker with a museum inside. Even though there are literally thousands and thousands of bunkers all over Albania, you get two for one while exploring this because there are some neat displays.

These bunkers were ordered by the dictator I mentioned before, Hoxha, and built by the Albanian people during the isolation period. The Bunk Art 2 museum houses memorabilia from that period so you can get a better understanding of just how dark those times were.

There is also another similar bunker museum, Bunk’Art 1, to check out near Dajti Mountain. If you combine going on the Dajti cable car and Bunk’Art 1, you can have an enjoyable day trip from Tirana.

Museums In Kruja

Kruja is a charming village nestled in the mountains of central Albania. It is known for its rich history and stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. The village is most famous for its association with Skanderbeg, Albania’s national hero.

One of the main attractions in Kruja is the Skanderbeg Museum, located within the ancient Kruja Castle. Another must visit is the Ethnographic Museum which showcases traditional Albanian life with its impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits.

4. Gjergj Kastrioti National Museum (Skanderbeg Museum)

The Skanderbeg Museum is a captivating tribute to the national hero of Albania, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg.One of the most interesting things to do in Kruja – this museum stands as a symbol of the country’s rich historical legacy.

It pays homage to Skanderbeg’s remarkable achievements as a military leader and an icon of Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire. As you enter the Skanderbeg Museum, you are greeted with a massive statue of Albania’s legendary figure.

The museum houses a remarkable collection of artifacts, weapons, armor, and historical documents that shed light on Skanderbeg’s life and his pivotal role in shaping Albania’s history.There are exhibits that chronicle Skanderbeg’s military campaigns, strategic brilliance, and unwavering determination.

Detailed maps, paintings, and sculptures bring the era to life, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Skanderbeg and his army. The Skanderbeg Museum itself was founded in 1982 and is housed within the Kruja Castle grounds.

The museum does have a castle-like appearance, similar to the historic towers of northern Albania, but it is not part of the original Kruja Castle ruins. There is no entrance fee for Kruja Castle, but there is a 500 Lek fee for the Skanderbeg Museum, and Albanians can enter for free.

5. Ethnographic Museum of Krujë

The Ethnographic Museum offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the traditional way of life in the region. Housed in a well-preserved Ottoman-style house, the museum showcases a rich collection of artifacts and exhibits that depict Albanian customs and traditions.

The carefully restored rooms are adorned with authentic furniture, household items, and tools, providing an authentic setting that reflects the lifestyle of Albanian families from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Demonstrating the creativity and talent of Albanian artisans, you can see things like traditional costumes and jewelry.

There are also intricately woven rugs, vibrant embroidery, and exquisite woodwork showcased within the traditional house. The entrance fee into the Ethnographic Museum is 400 Lek.

Best Museums In Shkoder

Shkoder, one of the oldest cities in Albania, is known for its vibrant culture and historical significance. The city is home to several notable museums, including the Site of Witness and Memory, which details the horrors of the communist regime.

The Museum of Rozafa Castle offers insights into the region’s ancient history and stunning views from the castle’s vantage point. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the Marubi National Museum of Photography, housing an extensive collection of historical photographs.

The History Museum of Shkodër provides a comprehensive look at the city’s past, showcasing artifacts from various periods of its history.

6. Marubi National Museum of Photography

Before visiting, I’d never been to a photography museum even though I like to consider myself an amateur photographer.

So this was a unique experience for me, and it gave me a lot more insight into how deep Albania’s history is, especially Shkoder. The photos show social, cultural, and political life in Albania from 1850 to the present. It’s one thing to learn about what happened, but images open up your mind to understand in a completely different way.

Even if you don’t usually consider yourself a museum person, since it’s visual, you might enjoy it. It can be a somber experience since Albania’s past is filled with hardships, but it’s definitely an interesting thing to do in Shkoder while visiting.

• 700 lek for adults
• 600 lek for groups over 12
• 350 for orphans, seniors, and people with disabilities 
• 210 lek for students and pupils aged 12-18
• Free for children under 12, war veterans, former political prisoners, paraplegic and tetraplegic individuals

7. History Museum of Shkoder

The Shkoder History Museum was established in 1947 with donations from religious communities (the Jesuits and Franciscans) and some prominent families of Shkoder. It was moved to its current residence in 1996, to the traditional Shkodran house of Osa Kuka.

While visiting you’ll get to take a step back in time to the Albanian Renaissance with the beautiful artwork that is displayed. There are also ethnographic and archaeological displays. Entrance to the museum is 150 lek for adults.

7. Site of Witness and Memory (Communist Crimes Museum)

The Site of Witness and Memory in Shkoder, Albania, serves as a poignant reminder of the country’s tumultuous communist past. Located in a former prison, the museum documents the brutal repression, imprisonment, and persecution faced by many Albanians during the communist era.

Through photographs, personal stories, and artifacts, visitors gain a profound understanding of the impact of the regime on individuals and families.It shows the resilience and courage of those who endured these hardships, making sure that their stories are not forgotten. 

A lot of the museums is printed-out text on the walls, which can be overwhelming to read it all. For this reason, if you are limited on time, I’d recommend visiting Marubi and the History Museum first as they are a bit more engaging.

9. Museum of Rozafa Castle

If you’re already planning to visit Rozafa Castle (it’s a must-see place in Shkoder), then you might as well visit the adjoining museum while you’re there. The Rozafa Castle Museum is located within the complex, so you can only visit if you pay the entrance ticket which is 400 lek.

The museum also has an entrance fee of 200 lek. The first few times I went I didn’t go in, but finally I did and I was pleasantly surprised. You get to see the only intact building in the complex from the inside. It is one of the most fortified buildings so the walls are very thick.

Some interesting artifacts show just how old the fortress and the city of Shkoder is! There is evidence that dates back to the Bronze Age, which makes Shkoder one of the longest-inhabited cities in the region. If you’re sticking to a budget, it’s not super necessary to visit. The History Museum of Shkoder will do fine and has more to see.

10. Gjirokaster Museums

Gjirokaster, often called the “City of Stone,” is renowned for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture and historical charm. This UNESCO World Heritage site is nestled in the Drinos Valley and offers picturesque views of the surrounding mountains.

One of the highlights of Gjirokaster is its abundance of traditional houses, which reflect the city’s rich cultural heritage. The Ethnographic Museum, housed in an 18th-century Ottoman-style building, offers a glimpse into traditional life in the region.

The Zekate House, Skënduli House, Ismail Kadare’s House, and Fico House are other notable examples, each showcasing unique architectural features and historical significance.

Gjirokaster Castle, perched high on a hill, dominates the skyline and offers stunning panoramic views of the city and valley below. This imposing fortress has played a crucial role in the region’s defense over the centuries and now houses a museum and the annual Gjirokaster National Folklore Festival.

Beneath the castle, the Cold War Tunnel Museum provides a fascinating look into the communist era, with a network of underground bunkers and tunnels designed to protect government officials in the event of a nuclear attack.

In these sections about the museums in Albania, I have highlighted specific areas or cities that have a hotspot of great museums: Tirana, Kruja, Shkoder, and Gjirokaster. It feels like every inch of Albania has a history that can be learned about, unfortunately, not everything has been preserved or documented.

This leads to only certain areas having good museums, but there are other museums in Albania that are incredible, but a little bit more out of the way. Here are some more Albania museums to check out:

11. National Museum of Medieval Art

The National Museum of Medieval Art in Korçë is a treasure trove of Albania’s medieval heritage. Established in 1980, the museum boasts an impressive collection of over 7,000 artworks, including icons, woodwork, metalwork, and textiles.

The highlight of the collection is its extensive array of religious icons, showcasing the rich tradition of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art in Albania. Even if you aren’t religious, the display is mesmerizing and was one of my favorite parts of visiting Korce.

The National Museum of Medieval Art is housed in a modern building that offers a serene atmosphere for visitors to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship and historical significance of the pieces. This museum in Albania serves as an important cultural institution not just for the country but for the whole region.

Many other museums in Albania focus on communism, so this one is quite unique since it preserves and promotes the artistic legacy of medieval Albania.

12. Archaeological Museum of Apolonia

The Archaeological Museum of Apollonia, located within the ancient city of Apollonia near Fier, Albania, is definitely for history enthusiasts! Housed in a restored 14th-century monastery, the museum showcases a vast collection of artifacts that highlight the city’s significance as a major center of commerce and culture in antiquity.

Visitors can explore a range of exhibits, including statues, pottery, inscriptions, and coins that span several centuries of Apollonia’s history. The museum’s serene setting, surrounded by the ruins of the ancient city and lush landscapes, enhances the experience.

Again, this is quite a special museum in Albania because of the collection size and level of preservation. It offers a unique glimpse into Albania’s rich archaeological heritage that shouldn’t be missed!

13. Museum of National Independence

Vlorë, a coastal city in southwestern Albania, is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant harbor, and a significant cultural landmark dedicated to the country’s struggle for independence.

The Museum of National Independence was established in the building where Albania’s independence was declared on November 28, 1912. This Vlore museum provides an immersive journey through the nation’s history.

Exhibits include photographs, documents, personal belongings of key figures, and artifacts that chronicle the events leading up to and following the Declaration of Independence. This museum in Albania displays the country’s path to sovereignty and the resilience of its people in their quest for freedom.

Visiting the best museums in Albania is a fantastic way to dive into the country’s fascinating past. Whether you’re in the buzzing capital of Tirana exploring the National History Museum and the Museum of Secret Surveillance, or wandering through the quaint village of Kruja with its Skanderbeg Museum, there’s so much to see.

If you follow this northern Albania driving route, you will visit the following counties all in one trip: Tirana, Durres, Lezhe, and Diber. Though Bovilla Lake and Kruja are well-known places to visit, a majority of this Albanian road trip is very much “off the beaten path”.

If you don’t care so much about picture-perfect destinations, then this is for you as it gives a chance to see a more raw and realistic side of Albania.

Day 1 – Bovilla Lake

Start off by renting a car in Tirana, either when you fly into Tirana airport or after you spend some time visiting Tirana – check out my guide to the best hostels in Tirana!

Drive to Bovilla Lake from Tirana – it’s about an hour from the city center or the airport, but with traffic it could be much longer.

Bovilla is a picturesque area known for the Bovilla Reservoir, which supplies water to the capital. Surrounded by rugged mountains and lush greenery, it’s a popular spot for hiking and picnicking.

Spend as much time as you’d like to explore Bovilla Lake as it’s a beautiful natural area with a canyon, cave, and cool hiking trails. Bring your own food for a picnic, or stop at Bovilla restaurant with a beautiful view.

After that, drive the 1 hour and 15 mins (traffic dependent) to the mountain village of Kruja, where you will stay overnight. Kruja is a historic town known for its medieval castle and as the center of resistance against the Ottomans led by national hero Skanderbeg.

The town features a charming bazaar, the Skanderbeg Museum, and stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making it a significant cultural and historical destination.

Depending on when you arrive, you might have time to still do some sightseeing. At the very least, make sure to grab a nice dinner with a sunset view, you won’t want to miss it!

There is a wide range of accommodation options in Kruja because it’s a popular destination. Most are either guesthouses or hotels, some of which are even within the castle perimeter – Room Nesti or Rooms Merlika.

There are also more modern apartments and fancier hotels like Hotel Kroi and Hotel Panorama if that is preferred. Pick something nice because you will spend two nights here. Compare all the hotel deals here.

Day 2 – Kruja & Qafshtama

Have a big breakfast to prepare for a full day of adventures ahead! Check out whatever you missed the day before in Kruja. Make sure you:

• Shop At Kruja Bazaar
• Explore Kruja Castle
• Visit The Skanderbeg Museum
• Learn At The Ethnographic Museum
• Visit Santuario de Hajji Mustafa Baba

For the remaining part of the day you will need to decide what to explore. Here are three nearby options.

• Hike To Teqeja e Sari Salltikut / Mount Sarisalltik
• Zezë Canyon / Kanionin e Zezë

This area is harder to access. The time of year and weather could also affect this. Make sure to talk with locals – possibly at your accommodation on more information for visiting Zeze Canyon.

• Shtamë Pass Nature Park / Parku Kombëtar Qafë Shtamë

Shtame Pass, also known as Qafshtama, is the furthest away so you will need to start out earlier than the other options if you decide to go.

Day 3 – Cape Of Rodon & Patok Lagoon

Leave Kruja early in the morning to get started towards the Cape of Rodon, about an hour and 20 minutes away. Some trails lead to various viewpoints where you can admire the coastal vistas.

You can also see old communist bunkers, the Church of Mamica and explore the ruins of the ancient Rodoni Castle. The Cape of Rodon holds significant historical importance in Albania and has a natural beauty that you’ll appreciate if you love the outdoors.

There are dramatic cliffs and beaches to swim at too. Cool off with a swim before heading for lunch at a beautiful winery and restaurant – Restaurant Kantina Duka.

Depending on how long you’d like to spend, you can do a vineyard tour, wine tasting, have a meal, and even a boat ride on the lake (if it’s available).

If you have the time and room in your stomach, head to Patok Lagoon and have a nice seafood dinner while watching the sunset. There are even charming overwater bungalows at ‘Laguna e Patokut’ restaurant to dine in.

For accommodation, you can choose between Plazhi San Pietro, which is closer to the Duka Winery. If you plan to go to Patok Lagoon, you can stay nearby in the beach village of Tale.

Day 4 – Ulza Nature Park & Laç Caves

Head northeast towards Ulza Regional Nature Park. It is a beautiful natural area known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna and a few hiking trails. Ulza Park has numerous bird species inhabiting the area.

Enjoy the beautiful drive along Shkopet Lake with the precarious Shkopet footbridge that you can cross if you dare. Head further to Ulza Lake, crossing the beautiful Ulza Bridge. Stop for some lunch in Ulez and enjoy the lake.

Nearby are the caves which are named: Shpella e Nezirit and Shpella e Valit, Mirditë. You will find them close to the small area marked as Laç. Rent the Liqeni Guest House to stay overnight.

Day 5 – Lezhe Castle & Rana e Hedhun

Go back the same way and drive towards Lezhe to visit the historic Lezha Castle. Lezha Castle, also known as Lissus Castle, is a fortress overlooking the Drin River valley.

With origins dating back to the Illyrians, it has been expanded by Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans.The castle played a key role in regional defense and trade. Today, it is a significant cultural and historical monument, offering visitors rich history and stunning views.

After visiting, head to the close beach town of Shengjin so you can visit Rana e Hedhun, also known as Thrown Sands Albania.

Known for its striking sand dunes that rise from the coastline into the pine-covered hills, it offers a picturesque blend of sea, sand, and forest. This natural attraction is perfect for relaxing, swimming, and exploring its scenic beauty.

Stop by Restaurant Detari in Shengjin for a great seafood meal. Head back to the capital to stay in Tirana or spend the evening and stay overnight at some of these accommodation options in Shengjin. This will depend on when you need to return your rental car as well.

It’s also hitting many places that are relatively unknown, so if you want to get off the beaten path – you’ll enjoy it for sure. 

Driving Conditions

This north Albania road trip is perfect for travelers unfamiliar with the country. If this is your first trip, then this Albanian road trip should be easy for you. Most roads should be alright if you rent the “normal” rental car from Tirana.

There are plenty of places in Albania where you would need a 4×4 vehicle, but many aren’t able to drive those, nor do they want to pay so much extra to get a big vehicle like that.

On this 5-day north Albania road trip, if you do encounter some bad roads, just turn back as you won’t ever be too far from the larger roads with these destinations.

Weather & Safety

Unless you’re visiting in the dead of winter, you shouldn’t worry about the weather affecting your trip. These destinations aren’t that far inland, which is usually where weather can be more dangerous.

Still, it’s wise to check before going in case there is snow or anything extreme forecasted. As for safety, Albania is very secure. You don’t need to worry about this at all. Since you won’t be so remote into the mountains, you have less risk.

Not necessarily risk from other humans, but in case any accidents happen, you are still relatively close to populated areas and especially Tirana.

As someone who lives in Shkoder, I want to offer you some insight to the best way to rent a car in Shkoder because there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Don’t have time to read the full article? Things can get tricky with finding a car rental in Shkoder that offers legitimate insurance. I used Go Rent because they offer insurance (covers everything except the bottom of the car) and were upfront about everything.

Chances are, they will be sold out in the summer because their cars are limited. The next best option is to do a car rental in Tirana before coming because they are bigger companies with actual insurance.

Shkoder Overview

If you’re unfamiliar with Shkoder, it is the largest city in northern Albania and often called the “capital of the north”. Besides just a city, Shkoder is also the name of the county.

Shkoder has been known for being a center for culture and religious tolerance. Art and music have been an integral part of the city over the centuries.

Renting A Car In Shkoder – What To Know

As a foreigner who lives here year-round, I see the changes that Shkoder goes through. The city doesn’t run solely off of tourism, but it does get much quieter in the winter.

Usually, it rains quite a bit – we don’t get extreme cold temperatures like the mountains but there is a lot of flooding to contend with.

In the summer, the city is bursting with tourists and Albanians returning from abroad for vacations. Through all of this, I have a perspective on both sides. Here is a very important thing to note.

1. The Biggest Issue – Car Rental Insurance

It’s a bit hard to describe but locals do not view insurance the same way as foreigners. Things have been a certain way in Albania for so long – very much that you have to deal with a problem as it arises.

Generally, things are “off the books” here, situations are dealt with through financial or social capital. Need something? Call someone you know or pay extra to make it go away.

From a foreign perspective, usually, people want protection and are used to paying for it. We have many forms of “insurance” or guarantees that companies will charge us consumers for – to the point where that is the norm and expected for us.

Especially, in the context of renting a car, where you are used to rental car companies trying to get extra money for a small scratch here or there or a technicality.

2. Checking Local Places To Rent A Car In Shkoder

Now I’m speaking from my own personal experience, I went around to many places to rent a car in Shkoder. From what I encountered, many of them are the same.

Usually, small offices that do lots of different services. If you go check them out you will see they are like travel agents that do long-distance bus tickets (like to Germany or Italy) to booking flights, and more local things like day trips and daily bicycle rental.

You’ll recognize these offices because they will have signs that say makina me qera which means car for rent. What most quote you will be 25 euro per day for manual and 35 euro per day for automatic (it will be much higher in July, August, and maybe Sept).

This is without insurance though. When you ask about insurance, prices that they tell you (or make up on the spot) will vary.

One place that seemed more honest told me that none of these small places can offer you insurance, they just say there is insurance but there really isn’t any. Check out the prices in Tirana to compare.

3. My Advice For Renting A Car In Shkoder

Even though I live here and I’m used to how things are done, if I am putting a liability on myself like a rental car, I would still prefer to reduce the risk with insurance. I think a lot of you reading this will agree.

From my time of scouring the Shkoder car rental options, I did find some success! I ended up going with GoRent Albania – Shkoder location. Since they are a branch of a larger company, it seems like they offer legitimate insurance.

The only thing not covered is the bottom of the car, which they tell you upfront about. You can also use a credit card to make the deposit (or 300 euro in cash) and you can pay by card as well.

Unfortunately, since it is a small branch, they might not have any cars available in the height of summer. You can contact them in advance though to reserve.

Since they are the only company in Shkoder I feel comfortable recommending, if they don’t have cars, I’d say to just rent from Tirana.

There are bigger companies that will have plenty of availability and legitimate insurance coverage. Plus, if you are flying in, it’s best and most convenient to pick up your rental car at Tirana Airport.

4. Driving Conditions In Shkoder Albania

Like a lot of Albania, road conditions can be hit or miss. Popular tourist paths, like the road going to Theth, is well done and maintained. The less known or touristy a route is, the road conditions will go down.

If you’re serious about getting into the wilderness, make sure to get the appropriate vehicle. Rental cars oftentimes have low bottoms and can easily get ruined if you take them on less-than-ideal roads.

That is also in perfect conditions, if you plan to come in winter or the shoulder season (anything besides summer), this is more important as you’re more likely to encounter various weather scenarios.

5. Driving Etiquette In Shkoder

It all depends on where you were raised and the driving culture – but most consider Albania’s driving to be pretty crazy and even downright reckless. To rent a car in Shkoder, you should be a confident driver.

As long as you are vigilant and practice defensive driving, you should be fine. My biggest recommendation is that if you aren’t used to driving manual, this is not the place to practice. Get a car rental that you know you’ll be comfortable and confident with.

6. Parking In Shkoder

Parking in Shkoder can be a mess, because there are no rules or guidelines I know of. I’ve never seen any parking signs to indicate the laws. The police do patrol and give out tickets though.

It is based mostly on luck if you can avoid this. I suggest getting accommodation that includes parking, or parking on back streets that aren’t that busy. Usually, tickets are given on roads with more traffic. 

7. Gas / Petrol Stations In Shkoder

Contrary to what I’ve seen in some gas stations in the south, card payments are not accepted at fuel stations in and around Shkoder.

Sometimes they will have the card symbols but it still might not be the case in reality. Now, I haven’t been with people who ask to use card so maybe it is possible – but from the vibes it seems unlikely. Take cash with you always to fill up.

Car Rental In Shkoder – Final Thoughts

Renting a car in Shkoder, Albania, offers the freedom to explore northern Albania’s untouched landscapes. However, finding a rental company with legitimate insurance can be tricky.

Shkoder, the cultural capital of northern Albania, experiences significant seasonal changes, impacting tourism and driving conditions.

Local rental offices often lack proper insurance, making it essential to choose reputable providers. For the best experience, ensure your rental vehicle suits the local driving conditions.

Always carry cash for fuel as card payments are unreliable at gas stations. Defensive driving is crucial due to Albania’s challenging driving etiquette.

Pros Of Living In Shkoder

There are a lot of great things about life in northern Albania, and for me, they tend to outweigh the negatives. It can sometimes feel like a little bubble but for the most part, it is awesome. Here are some of my pros of living in Shkoder!

1. Relatively Close To Two International Airports

Compared with other cities in Albania, Shkoder is well situated for international travel as it has two international airports relatively close by. Tirana International Airport is 1 hour 45 mins to 2 hours 30 mins away depending on traffic.

Podgorica International Airport is 1 hour 20 mins away, plus some extra time for the border crossing. Unfortunately, there are no direct buses to Podgorica airport. You do have the option of taking the bus to either Podgorica (they run pretty frequently) and then taking a taxi from the bus station to the airport. Get a direct transfer here.

2. Great Location For Exploring Montenegro Too

As discussed, Montenegro is so close to Shkoder. It’s about 30 mins to reach the two primary, closest border crossings into Montenegro. Since Montenegro is pretty compact, you can see a lot of the country on day trips (do a day trip to Ulcinj Montenegro!)

When you drive there, you will need to purchase insurance at the border for 15 euro but it lasts two weeks from my understanding so you can make the most of that by doing multiple trips.

3. 30 Minutes From The Adriatic Seaside

When you think of northern Albania, your mind might not necessarily go to the idea of a beach day. Shkoder is located in an ideal position so you can get your fix of sand and sun, without having the boring winters that often come with beachside cities in Albania.

There’s also a good range of beaches to visit. They aren’t the famous beaches of the Albanian Riviera by any means but still nice enough. I’d suggest visiting Rana e Hedhun – Thrown Sand Albania!

4. Hiking Paradise – Gateway To The Albanian Alps

Though all of Albania is ideal for hiking, what can be considered the “premium” hiking of Albania is in the Accursed Mountains. Because of their similarity, they are nicknamed the Albanian Alps, which is usually how they are referred to.

Shkoder City is known as the gateway for accessing this mountain range since public transport and tours usually leave from here. Check out my guide on the best day trips from Shkoder!

5. Shkodra City Layout Is Flat – Great For Cycling Everywhere

Unlike most Albanian cities, Shkoder is located on a very flat plain which is ideal for cycling everywhere. Shkoder is nicknamed the city of bikes for a reason.

After half a year of living in Shkoder, I finally got a bike, and what a game-changer it is for errands! You can also bypass traffic easily, which is great to save time, especially with the busy summer season.

6. Lower Cost Of Living (Compared With Tirana)

It’s no secret that many foreigners are attracted to the lower cost of living in Albania when compared with living in Western countries like the US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.

Of course, because of inflation and other economic factors, prices have gone up and it’s not as affordable as some people expect. This is very true if you base yourself in Tirana since it’s the capital. Prices are much higher there than in most places in Albania (the Albanian Riviera is also expensive).

Shkoder is a place that is still lively in the off-season but won’t break the bank with prices, it’s a nice middle ground.

7. Ancient City With A Cool Castle

Shkoder has a very long history – so much so that it’s named Albania’s Ancient City. The prominent castle in Shkoder, Rozafa Castle, has evidence showing its age to be from the Bronze Age.

There is also an interesting legend that surrounds this iconic fortress. Rozafa greets you on the road as you come from Tirana, giving a great first impression too. 

8. Known For Religious Tolerance Over The Centuries

Shkoder’s intense past includes quite a bit of religious influences over the centuries, resulting in a lot of religious tolerance. Nowadays, when visiting you will notice the presence of many mosques and churches in close proximity.

Shkoder is also called the home of catholicism in Albania, there’s a whole complex with a dedicated museum for it. If you want to learn more, you can read more about Shkoder’s history here.

9. A Good Degree Of Cultural Preservation

Albania in general has had tons of craziness happen in the last century. Unfortunately, this (and also current government corruption) has greatly impacted how Albania’s ancient history has been preserved.

A lot of great museums in Albania are located in Tirana, which is a shame because there are many opportunities for more and for the current ones to be updated and expanded.

For a place outside of the capital, Shkoder actually has a good variety of museums and art galleries to check out. It’s super nice to have this preservation, especially when I have friends that come to visit. Check out my full guide on things to do in Shkoder! 10. Charming City Centre With Pedestrian Area

Shkoder has the feel of a small town but does have quite a range of surrounding neighborhoods to choose from. Shkoder city center has some cute places to hang out, have local food, and listen to live music. Check out the best cafes in Shkoder.

The main pedestrian area is called Pedonale, so if you want to be close to things going on, it’s best to get an apartment nearby. 

11. The Variety Of Foods Available Is Growing

In some places in Albania, you get the same cuisine in every restaurant or cafe. As an example, a beach town will have mostly seafood and pasta. A mountain town will most likely have hearty mountain cuisine. Shkoder has a great mix of all of the different types, plus a lot of new, foreign types of food as well.

New cafes and restaurants are branching out to expand beyond traditional food which gives way more options than ever before. Make sure you check out the best restaurants in Shkoder to get a vibe for what we have. 

12. Still Somewhat Alive In The Winter Without Tourism

I have touched on this in previous paragraphs, but it is really important to note. I used to live in a very popular summer destination on the Albanian Riviera, the city of Saranda. Not only was it pretty expensive, but it was also completely dead in the winter.

Most of this is due to the weather, but also the fact that Saranda is kind of cut off from the rest of Albania because you have to take a 4.5/5 hour bus through the mountains to get there from Tirana. People are way less likely to come all that way from the capital for bad weather and no off-season activities.

In comparison, Shkoder is well connected to the capital with buses leaving every hour with a travel time of two hours, even in the winter months. With easier access and plenty of other economic activity beyond tourism, Shkoder stays alive in the winter.

13. Safety Is Pretty Good

Albania is generally very safe and Shkoder isn’t an exception. There are some things you should know though, I have had a few incidents. You can read more about it here in the guide to safety in Shkoder.

Cons Of Living In Shkoder

Like any place, there are downsides to settling in the Capital of Northern Albania. Here are a few cons of living in Shkoder Albania that I have encountered, things that you might want to be aware of beforehand.

1. Known For Lots Of Rainfall & Flooding

Due to Shkoder’s geographic location and weather from the nearby mountains, Shkoder has a lot of rain in the winter. Shkoder is positioned right next to Lake Shkoder – the largest lake in the Balkans, as well as three rivers!

When you combine this with the extremely flat nature of the city and poor city drainage, extreme flooding is common. Make sure to bring some rain boots. 

2. Can Take A While To Make Local Friends

This phenomenon is not limited to Shkoder, but I wanted to mention this as it has been one of my biggest struggles as someone who loves having a social life, especially deep, nurturing friendships.

It is possible to make some friends, but I have found it difficult to make anything other than superficial connections. Recently, it has gotten better though.

3. Not Many Foreigners Living In Shkoder (This Could Be A Pro Too)

Now on the one hand I do enjoy this because when I lived in Saranda there were a lot of foreigners living there in comparison, and also travelers always passing through.

It got to be too much as there is quite a bit of drama (and even scandal!). Shkoder is nice because it doesn’t have that, but since it can take a while to make local friends, this can be a negative to not have at least a few foreigners around.

4. Transition To The Gheg Dialect Of Albanian

If you’ve lived in other places in Albania, chances are you were hearing and learning the southern and official dialect of Albania – Tosk.

Moving and living in Shkoder means you will need to adapt to the northern dialect of Gheg as well as Shkoder slang and the Shkoder accent. I wouldn’t have imagined such a difference but trust me it exists! Start by learning the best, basic Albanian words to know!

Final Thoughts On Living In Shkoder

Shkoder Albania is located in an amazing location since it’s right on the largest lake in the Balkans (Shkodra Lake), 30 minutes away from the Adriatic seaside, and at the footstep of the glorious Albanian Alps!

There are tons of fun Shkoder day trips but most people don’t know about them because tourism is just now kicking off in the north.

Since I’ve been living in Albania, specifically Shkoder city, I wanted to give you the full rundown of possibilities. There are so many off-the-beaten-path places just begging for some attention. Here are the 10 best day trips from Shkoder.

Most Popular Day Trips From Shkoder

Visiting the mountain village of Theth and the beautiful Shala River are two of the most popular day trips from Shkoder! A lot of this has to do with social media since these places are all over Instagram.

Even though they are well known, arranging a day trip from Shkoder is the easiest option for budget travelers or those who don’t want to rent a car or hitchhike.

1. Theth

Theth is a picturesque mountain village located in the northern part of Albania and makes for an excellent day trip from Shkoder.

It’s probably the most visited place in northern Albania and definitely one of the biggest tourist attractions in the whole country.

It’s well displayed on social media which means it can be very crowded, make sure to check out all of my tips and things to know before going to Theth!

Theth is renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Surrounded by rugged mountains, it is settled in a lush valley with a pristine, icey blue river.

It offers a breathtaking backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. It is situated within the Theth National Park, which is part of the larger Balkan Peace Park Project.

The park is a haven for hikers and adventure seekers, boasting numerous hiking trails, including the famous path to the Blue Eye waterfall –  a mesmerizing natural spring with crystal-clear waters.

In Albanian, it is called “Syri i Kalter”, but there are two in Albania, so this one is referred to as the one in the north – the other is in Saranda in the south. It’s a popular spot for a refreshing swim and provides a fun photo opportunity.

Theth is also known for preserving the traditional customs and architecture of Ghegaria (northern Albania). Visitors can see the charming stone houses in the traditional mountain style.

While it’s possible to visit Theth in a day, many visitors choose to stay overnight to fully experience the village’s tranquility. There are guesthouses and traditional inns where you can enjoy warm Albanian hospitality and some great organic, mountain cuisine.

You can do mostly outdoor activities, like hiking, swimming, and exploring the historical Lock-in Tower. It’s a great opportunity to take in the serene atmosphere and appreciate the slower pace of life in the Albanian Alps.

Getting There: Theth can be reached from Shkoder by road, and the journey itself offers scenic views. It’s approximately a 2 hour drive.

You can take the bus to Theth, there are two a day. You can check all the details in my Shkoder public transport guide.

The alternative is to drive but you should make sure to rent the appropriate car as it can be a challenging road with lots of zig zags. The weather can change for the worse quickly in the mountains so check conditions before setting out.

You can also do an organized day trip to Theth which helps to alleviate any driving stress! If you are short on time, I’d highly recommend it. You can also find day tours leaving from Tirana.

2. Lumi i Shales & Komani Lake

Visiting Lumi i Shales (Shala River) is a great idea for a day trip from Shkoder. Whether you’re interested in boat tours, swimming, or simply enjoying the picturesque surroundings, Shala River promises a day filled with natural beauty and outdoor adventure.

Lumi i Shales, also known as Shala River, is a beautiful waterway that meanders through the dramatic Albanian Alps. Its crystal-clear waters and surrounding landscapes make it a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

The river’s inviting but freezing waters provide an excellent opportunity for swimming and relaxation. Its purity and refreshing coolness make it a perfect spot to unwind on a hot day.

The journey along the Shala River is not just about the water; it’s also about the stunning scenery. The river has impressive canyons and rock formations. Towering cliffs, lush vegetation, and the sense of being completely surrounded by remote nature is an amazing experience.

After enjoying the river, you can eat at some of the local guesthouses and have fish caught in the river, along with other sides like bean soup, fresh salad, local cheese, etc. 

Beyond the river, the Shala Valley offers opportunities for hiking and exploration. You can trek through the nearby mountains or visit nearby villages to get a deeper sense of the region’s culture.

Getting There: Shala River is accessible by road from Shkoder to the Koman port. From there you then need to take a boat trip through Komani Lake and before turning onto Shala River. The journey itself offers glimpses of northern Albania’s isolation and scenic beauty.

If you decide to stay in the capital, you can still do a day trip from Tirana to Shala River.

Other Awesome Day Trips From Shkoder

There are plenty of amazing options for Shkoder day trips, but unfortunately, you can’t rely on public transport to reach many places. My suggestion is to rent a car at Tirana Airport so you can make sure to purchase legitimate insurance coverage.

One of the consistent buses you could take for a Shkoder day trip is going to the beach town of Velipoje. Technically they are furgons (small vans) that go at sporadic times – usually when the furgon fills up or if the driver decides to go. Look at your options here on the updated Shkoder bus schedule.

3. Thrown Sands / Rana e Hedhun

Rana e Hedhun, also known as Thrown Sands, is a unique natural wonder located near Shengjin, Albania. It’s renowned for its extraordinary geological formation where a a large sand dune goes from the top of a cliff to the seaside.

It is an excellent place to relax and soak up the sun. This large, sandy beach provides comfortable spots for sunbathing and plenty of room for beach activities.

Rana e Hedhun is easily accessible from Shkoder and other nearby towns. It’s a relatively short drive, making it a convenient day trip option for those looking to escape the city and explore Albania’s beautiful coastal landscapes.

Nearby Shengjin offers a variety of seafood restaurants where you can savor fresh catch-of-the-day dishes. Enjoying a delicious seafood meal by the sea is a delightful way to complete your day trip from Shkoder.

Try Restorant Detari, it’s my favorite. If you google the restaurant, the wrong location comes up so I’ve tagged the right one here.

4. Prekal Canyon

Located only 30 minutes driving away from Shkoder city center is the canyon of Prekal with the River Kiri running through it. It is also known as Kanione i Prekal and Kanione i Ures se Shtrejte – most locals just call it ‘Prekal’.

This is a popular swimming spot for locals in the summer. Unlike going to the beaches in Albania where you normally have to pay for a sunbed, going to Prekal is more cost-friendly for families.

It also has more adventure to it because it is a very deep canyon so it’s common to cliff jump into the water from different heights. Reserve your tour to Prekal here.

5. Razem & Boge

About 1-hour drive from Shkoder city center, you can reach the charming mountain villages of Razem and Boge. To reach Razem, you need to turn right off of SH21.

If you continue on SH21, you’ll reach the village of Boge. Both are beautiful areas where you can hike and have a picnic. In Razem there is also a large, level soccer/football field that you could play sports on too.

There are guesthouses in each village where you can eat, have a coffee and stay overnight. If you are visiting during the off-season (anytime besides June – August) some things could be closed.

In Razem, there are some restaurants/hotels that stay open so you can count on that when visiting. It didn’t seem like much was open when I visited Boge in the off-season.

6. Malesia e Madhe / SH20

Malesia e Madhe, which translates to “Great Highlands,” is a picturesque region located in the northern part of Albania. It is characterized by its stunning natural landscapes, including rugged mountains, lush valleys, and pristine rivers. The area’s untouched beauty is a major draw for nature enthusiasts.

Malesia e Madhe offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, trekking, and mountain biking. This is why I wrote a whole article about why it is the best road trip in Albania. The region is home to numerous trails that cater to varying skill levels, allowing visitors to explore the wilderness and take in breathtaking views.

It is easily accessible from Shkoder, making it a convenient day trip destination. The drive itself has scenic routes through the countryside for about 40 minutes before you start ascending into the highlands.

On the way back, you can stop at Bar Restaurant Syri i Sheganit for beautiful views of Lake Shkodra.

7. Ulza Regional Nature Park

Ulza Regional Nature Park is a beautiful natural area known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, making it a great Shkoder day trip if you’re a nature lover.

There’s a lake and the park offers a few hiking trails to explore its natural wonders. Ulza Park has numerous bird species inhabiting the area. It’s a great place to spot various avian species in their natural habitat.

It’s conveniently located, so It’s easily accessible for a day trip from Shkoder or Tirana. On your way back to Shkoder, stop at Restaurant Bezhi for some excellent grilled meat.

8. Cape Of Rodon / Lagoon of Patok

The Cape of Rodon has natural beauty that you’ll appreciate if you love the outdoors. It has some dramatic cliffs and beaches to swim at too, perfect for a fun, outdoorsy day trip from Shkoder. The area around the cape offers excellent hiking and exploration opportunities.

Some trails lead to various viewpoints where you can admire the coastal vistas. You can also see old communist bunkers, the Church of Mamica and explore the ruins of the ancient Rodoni Castle. The Cape of Rodon holds significant historical importance in Albania.

It is associated with the legendary Albanian hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, who led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. The cape is said to be one of Skanderbeg’s strongholds.

On the way back to Shkoder, stop at the coastal Lagoon of Patok for sunset. You can have some fresh seafood on cute, over-water bungalows there. If you’re in Tirana, you can visit with an organized tour to the Cape of Rodon with a wine tasting.

9. Kruja

Kruje (also seen as Kruja) is one of Albania’s most historically significant towns, known as the hometown of the national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. Skanderbeg led a resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, and Kruje was his stronghold.

Visiting Kruje allows you to delve into Albania’s rich history and learn about Skanderbeg’s legacy. Kruje Castle (Kalaja e Krujes) is perched atop a hill with commanding views of the surrounding area. The castle houses a museum dedicated to Skanderbeg and the history of the resistance.

Exploring the castle and its museum is a must for history enthusiasts. In addition to the Skanderbeg Museum, Kruje also boasts an Ethnographic Museum (Muzeu Etnografik) where you can explore Albanian traditions, clothing, and daily life through various exhibits.

Kruje’s Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjeter) is a bustling market where you can shop for traditional Albanian crafts, souvenirs, and local products. Kruje often hosts cultural events and festivals that provide insights into Albanian traditions, music, and dance. Check if any events are scheduled during your visit to enhance your cultural experience.

Kruje is a great day trip from Shkoder because it’s conveniently located within a relatively short drive from Shkoder, about an hour and a half. If you end up staying in Tirana, you can also visit from there with this organized day trip to Kruje and Sari Salltik Cave.

10. Qafshtama National Park

Qafshtama is similar to Ulza but a much larger park that is located on the same road going to Kruja but much deeper into the mountains. It takes about 45 minutes from Kruja.

You might recognize this particular name as it’s on water bottles all over Albania – the company and water source are in this park.

Many know northern Albania through stereotypes of being hard and wild – something untamable and full of tradition. Fortunately, there’s a lot more than that.

Known as the beating heart of the North, Shkoder is a city steeped in tradition and ancient history.

On the road from Tirana or the Montenegrin coast, Rozafa Castle will be hard to miss on the way into town. This ancient fortress is a tribute to Shkoder’s long history, as far back as the Bronze Age.

In centuries past, Shkoder has been a beacon for religious tolerance. It’s known as Albania’s capital for catholicism.

Music and art have also thrived, especially photography which is very evident with the impressive Marubi collection, housed at the Marubi National Photography Museum.

More recently, Shkoder has garnered a reputation of being the “city of bikes” since it’s located on a large flat plain, ideal for cycling. 

Generally, Shkoder has a different vibe compared to the rest of Albania. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but it’s unique.

Of course, some obvious reasons would be because of the unique pedestrian areas in the city center, called the ‘Pedonale’. These areas have a charming atmosphere, especially when people are enjoying food, drinks, and live music.

Is Shkoder Safe?

Yes, Shkoder is very safe, especially compared with other Western European travel destinations.

You should have no problems with common travel safety concerns like pickpocketing, walking alone at night, etc. Shkodran (the people of Shkoder) are proud of their city and treat visitors with kindness.

10 Things To Know About Safety In Shkoder

There are lots of great things to do in Shkoder, in the center and also on the city outskirts. If you have time in your Albania itinerary, I’d recommend that you spend a few days.

Most importantly though, is Shkoder safe? With stereotypes, and even prominent government organization websites advising that it’s “dangerous”, it’s normal that you might be concerned.

I’ve living in Albania for a few years now, and most recently, Shkoder has been my home. I’d like to touch more on safety in Shkoder, with my own experiences. 

Hospital & Emergency Care In Shkoder

The main hospital in Shkoder (and northern Albania) is a public one located on the outer edge of Shkoder city. On Google Maps, it’s listed as Spitali Rajonal i Shkodrës.

If there is an emergency, people will be taken to the emergency room there. You can call 127 to reach the hospital/ambulance service.

You can also visit the American Hospital right next door, though I don’t think they can handle emergency issues. It acts as more of a private care facility.

If you have a non-emergency issue, I’d recommend going there as there will be more English-speaking staff. The public hospital responds to emergencies for everyone of course, but for other general treatment, it is for Albanian citizens.

The American Hospital might not have a specialist for whatever you need, if that is the case, you will probably need to have an Albanian friend help you find the right doctor in the public hospital and possibly act as a translator.

Police / Immigration Officers

If you need the police, you can call 129. They often hang out in the city center at Sheshi Nene Tereza, near the pedonale.

There is also a police station located on the outskirts of the city. Near Lake Shkodra, there is a large police headquarters which is where you go for the immigration process if you are applying for residency in Shkoder.

It’s a gated complex specifically for immigration and the hours are less frequent. So if you have a non-immigration issue, just go to the one in the city.

Street Harassment In Shkoder

Coming from someone who has traveled (and lived) in countries that are considered extremely “safe” and some that are on the opposite end too, I will say that street harassment happens everywhere.

I had more scary street encounters happen when I lived in Ireland and it’s ranked #3 as safest in the world. 

Now as for Albania, it can depend on where you are. I lived in Saranda, a small beach town for a year and it was very safe.

I never had any street harassment at all, though my friend did have a scary encounter, which was definitely out of the ordinary.

Being in Shkoder does give a different vibe, a bit more rough around the edge. The north in general has had way less money put into it, but tourism has been picking up and that is changing now.

I had some minor harassment issues like an old man stopped me on the street and was either asking me to go with him to a hotel or what hotel I was staying at, either way, it was weird.

It happened in broad daylight with people around so I didn’t feel threatened, but it was strange. 

As a woman going around the city alone, I do get stares (which is part of Albanian culture), and sometimes guys will say small things, but it never escalates beyond that.

I know that sounds weird, coming from Western culture, if guys are saying something to you, it usually means they might do something worse. Here, they bark but they don’t bite (usually).

More recently I had a guy follow me as I was walking back from Rruga Et’hem Osmani (a popular pedestrian way near the lake) while it was getting dark.

At first, I thought it was a coincidence since lots of people were out, but it became obvious so I went into a large store thinking that would deter him.

Well, it didn’t because he came in after me and got very close to me as I was pretending to look around the store. I was trying to avoid causing a scene and thankfully, I was able to finally lose him in the aisles.

Everything turned out okay, but I was really shocked because I had been in Albania a long time and never had anything like this happen to me. 

So all of this to say, Shkoder is generally safe. These were two small incidents that happened in many months of living here.

It’s not the same level of safety I had in Saranda, but nonetheless, it’s still extremely low compared with other Western European cities.

Is Water In Shkoder Safe?

Yes, generally the water in Shkoder is safe to drink. In many other places in Albania, it isn’t though. This is primarily because Shkoder’s water comes from the mountains, which is a good source.

You might see that cafes and restaurants in Shkoder serve tap water, which is normal and safe. You should still check with your accommodation though because some buildings might have old pipes which can pollute it.

Albanians err on the side of caution when it comes to water purity, so trust them if they say it is good to drink.

Personally, since I live here, I do buy purified water because my stomach started hurting after a few months. If you’re here for a short period, you shouldn’t have issues.

Criminal Activity

Compared with my home country (the US) where kidnapping, robberies, street mugging, shootings, etc, happen all the time, Albania is very safe, especially if you are a tourist.

Like anywhere in the world, Albania does have criminal activity, though it’s not something that touches day-to-day life generally.

Usually, it’s a higher level of corruption or other illegal activities that remains behind the scenes (as long as you don’t go looking for it).

Many foreigners hear stereotypes of Albania and Albanians so they have this idea of mafia, drugs, corruption, etc. Usually, these misconceptions are based on Albanians that live abroad.

As for Shkoder, sometimes it can get a bad rap. For example, my Albanian friend from Saranda came to visit and she said it was the furthest north she had ever been.

After spending the weekend, she was really surprised at how nice it was because she didn’t have a positive idea of Shkoder before coming.

So it just goes to show you can’t always trust others’ opinions, especially if they haven’t visited before.

Summer VS Winter

Because Shkoder, like the rest of Albania, depends a lot on tourism money, the summer and winter have different vibes.

Yes, the weather changes, but it’s more than that. Many people make the majority of their money in the summer, whether that is doing double shifts as a waiter, running tours, or having extra business at a restaurant.

So during the winter, people aren’t making as much and have to rely on the money from the summer. Here in Shkoder, that means sometimes there’s a bit more petty crime (like break-ins).

In general, there are fewer people out and fewer daylight hours, so it can feel a little more eerie if you’re walking alone.

Shkoder Street Begging

We do have street begging in Shkoder, primarily from the Roma community. It’s normal to see people sitting in a particular spot begging and also for young kids to approach you while sitting at cafes and restaurants.

This doesn’t impact your safety in Shkoder. Whether you choose to give or not, they mean no harm and will leave if you say no.

The Roma community is usually around the banks of the Buna River and the area heading towards the castle, a little way outside of the city.

Unfortunately, Roma living conditions are quite bad – this is an issue that needs more attention for sure.

As for your safety, while going through these areas, I’ve never heard of anyone having issues. I’d still recommend not flashing any signs of wealth, even just to be empathetic and respectful.

Staring Culture

You might observe that Albanians like to stare. There is a notable culture of intense staring here. Adapting might be hard, especially since prolonged staring is often deemed as impolite behavior in other cultures.

However, in Albania, this is regarded as a customary method of assessing someone and really they mean no harm. While you can expect staring from all ages, it is particularly associated with the older generations.

This could be attributed to their upbringing during the Hoxha dictatorship era, where there was a lack of trust in those around them and isolation from foreign influences.

It’s worth noting that many older Albanians have never had the opportunity to interact with foreigners, so their stares stem from curiosity rather than any ill intent.

Hiking Safety In Shkoder

The scenery around Shkoder is stunning but wild. Exploring it is a real adventure, but you’ve gotta keep safety in mind. Lots of folks use local guides who know the lay of the land and all the trails.

If you’re thinking of going solo, at least make sure someone knows where you’re headed. I’d suggest using a hiking app like AllTrails to stay on track, and bring some extra power too, like a portable power bank. 

Also, the weather can get crazy and change fast, so make sure to talk with locals about what to expect before you head out.

No need to freak out, but it’s essential to realize that people have lost their lives in these mountains because they didn’t take things seriously (including the weather).

Not too long ago, some tourists went out in bad weather conditions and sadly passed away in the nearby Valbona area.

It’s tough that the Albanian rescue teams often have to put their own lives on the line to help out. So, please, be careful. Your choices impact more than just you.
