North Albania Road Trip – Bovilla, Kruja, Qafshtama, Rodon, Patok, Ulza, Laç, Lezhe, Rana e Hedhun

This first epic north Albania road trip itinerary spans over a few different counties with a nice mix of lakes, canyons, caves, a castle and historic village, a lagoon, and the seaside!

If you follow this northern Albania driving route, you will visit the following counties all in one trip: Tirana, Durres, Lezhe, and Diber. Though Bovilla Lake and Kruja are well-known places to visit, a majority of this Albanian road trip is very much “off the beaten path”.

If you don’t care so much about picture-perfect destinations, then this is for you as it gives a chance to see a more raw and realistic side of Albania.

Day 1 – Bovilla Lake

Start off by renting a car in Tirana, either when you fly into Tirana airport or after you spend some time visiting Tirana – check out my guide to the best hostels in Tirana!

Drive to Bovilla Lake from Tirana – it’s about an hour from the city center or the airport, but with traffic it could be much longer.

Bovilla is a picturesque area known for the Bovilla Reservoir, which supplies water to the capital. Surrounded by rugged mountains and lush greenery, it’s a popular spot for hiking and picnicking.

Spend as much time as you’d like to explore Bovilla Lake as it’s a beautiful natural area with a canyon, cave, and cool hiking trails. Bring your own food for a picnic, or stop at Bovilla restaurant with a beautiful view.

After that, drive the 1 hour and 15 mins (traffic dependent) to the mountain village of Kruja, where you will stay overnight. Kruja is a historic town known for its medieval castle and as the center of resistance against the Ottomans led by national hero Skanderbeg.

The town features a charming bazaar, the Skanderbeg Museum, and stunning views of the surrounding landscape, making it a significant cultural and historical destination.

Depending on when you arrive, you might have time to still do some sightseeing. At the very least, make sure to grab a nice dinner with a sunset view, you won’t want to miss it!

There is a wide range of accommodation options in Kruja because it’s a popular destination. Most are either guesthouses or hotels, some of which are even within the castle perimeter – Room Nesti or Rooms Merlika.

There are also more modern apartments and fancier hotels like Hotel Kroi and Hotel Panorama if that is preferred. Pick something nice because you will spend two nights here. Compare all the hotel deals here.

Day 2 – Kruja & Qafshtama

Have a big breakfast to prepare for a full day of adventures ahead! Check out whatever you missed the day before in Kruja. Make sure you:

• Shop At Kruja Bazaar
• Explore Kruja Castle
• Visit The Skanderbeg Museum
• Learn At The Ethnographic Museum
• Visit Santuario de Hajji Mustafa Baba

For the remaining part of the day you will need to decide what to explore. Here are three nearby options.

• Hike To Teqeja e Sari Salltikut / Mount Sarisalltik
• Zezë Canyon / Kanionin e Zezë

This area is harder to access. The time of year and weather could also affect this. Make sure to talk with locals – possibly at your accommodation on more information for visiting Zeze Canyon.

• Shtamë Pass Nature Park / Parku Kombëtar Qafë Shtamë

Shtame Pass, also known as Qafshtama, is the furthest away so you will need to start out earlier than the other options if you decide to go.

Day 3 – Cape Of Rodon & Patok Lagoon

Leave Kruja early in the morning to get started towards the Cape of Rodon, about an hour and 20 minutes away. Some trails lead to various viewpoints where you can admire the coastal vistas.

You can also see old communist bunkers, the Church of Mamica and explore the ruins of the ancient Rodoni Castle. The Cape of Rodon holds significant historical importance in Albania and has a natural beauty that you’ll appreciate if you love the outdoors.

There are dramatic cliffs and beaches to swim at too. Cool off with a swim before heading for lunch at a beautiful winery and restaurant – Restaurant Kantina Duka.

Depending on how long you’d like to spend, you can do a vineyard tour, wine tasting, have a meal, and even a boat ride on the lake (if it’s available).

If you have the time and room in your stomach, head to Patok Lagoon and have a nice seafood dinner while watching the sunset. There are even charming overwater bungalows at ‘Laguna e Patokut’ restaurant to dine in.

For accommodation, you can choose between Plazhi San Pietro, which is closer to the Duka Winery. If you plan to go to Patok Lagoon, you can stay nearby in the beach village of Tale.

Day 4 – Ulza Nature Park & Laç Caves

Head northeast towards Ulza Regional Nature Park. It is a beautiful natural area known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna and a few hiking trails. Ulza Park has numerous bird species inhabiting the area.

Enjoy the beautiful drive along Shkopet Lake with the precarious Shkopet footbridge that you can cross if you dare. Head further to Ulza Lake, crossing the beautiful Ulza Bridge. Stop for some lunch in Ulez and enjoy the lake.

Nearby are the caves which are named: Shpella e Nezirit and Shpella e Valit, Mirditë. You will find them close to the small area marked as Laç. Rent the Liqeni Guest House to stay overnight.

Day 5 – Lezhe Castle & Rana e Hedhun

Go back the same way and drive towards Lezhe to visit the historic Lezha Castle. Lezha Castle, also known as Lissus Castle, is a fortress overlooking the Drin River valley.

With origins dating back to the Illyrians, it has been expanded by Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans.The castle played a key role in regional defense and trade. Today, it is a significant cultural and historical monument, offering visitors rich history and stunning views.

After visiting, head to the close beach town of Shengjin so you can visit Rana e Hedhun, also known as Thrown Sands Albania.

Known for its striking sand dunes that rise from the coastline into the pine-covered hills, it offers a picturesque blend of sea, sand, and forest. This natural attraction is perfect for relaxing, swimming, and exploring its scenic beauty.

Stop by Restaurant Detari in Shengjin for a great seafood meal. Head back to the capital to stay in Tirana or spend the evening and stay overnight at some of these accommodation options in Shengjin. This will depend on when you need to return your rental car as well.

It’s also hitting many places that are relatively unknown, so if you want to get off the beaten path – you’ll enjoy it for sure. 

Driving Conditions

This north Albania road trip is perfect for travelers unfamiliar with the country. If this is your first trip, then this Albanian road trip should be easy for you. Most roads should be alright if you rent the “normal” rental car from Tirana.

There are plenty of places in Albania where you would need a 4×4 vehicle, but many aren’t able to drive those, nor do they want to pay so much extra to get a big vehicle like that.

On this 5-day north Albania road trip, if you do encounter some bad roads, just turn back as you won’t ever be too far from the larger roads with these destinations.

Weather & Safety

Unless you’re visiting in the dead of winter, you shouldn’t worry about the weather affecting your trip. These destinations aren’t that far inland, which is usually where weather can be more dangerous.

Still, it’s wise to check before going in case there is snow or anything extreme forecasted. As for safety, Albania is very secure. You don’t need to worry about this at all. Since you won’t be so remote into the mountains, you have less risk.

Not necessarily risk from other humans, but in case any accidents happen, you are still relatively close to populated areas and especially Tirana.

As someone who lives in Shkoder, I want to offer you some insight to the best way to rent a car in Shkoder because there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Don’t have time to read the full article? Things can get tricky with finding a car rental in Shkoder that offers legitimate insurance. I used Go Rent because they offer insurance (covers everything except the bottom of the car) and were upfront about everything.

Chances are, they will be sold out in the summer because their cars are limited. The next best option is to do a car rental in Tirana before coming because they are bigger companies with actual insurance.

Shkoder Overview

If you’re unfamiliar with Shkoder, it is the largest city in northern Albania and often called the “capital of the north”. Besides just a city, Shkoder is also the name of the county.

Shkoder has been known for being a center for culture and religious tolerance. Art and music have been an integral part of the city over the centuries.

Renting A Car In Shkoder – What To Know

As a foreigner who lives here year-round, I see the changes that Shkoder goes through. The city doesn’t run solely off of tourism, but it does get much quieter in the winter.

Usually, it rains quite a bit – we don’t get extreme cold temperatures like the mountains but there is a lot of flooding to contend with.

In the summer, the city is bursting with tourists and Albanians returning from abroad for vacations. Through all of this, I have a perspective on both sides. Here is a very important thing to note.

1. The Biggest Issue – Car Rental Insurance

It’s a bit hard to describe but locals do not view insurance the same way as foreigners. Things have been a certain way in Albania for so long – very much that you have to deal with a problem as it arises.

Generally, things are “off the books” here, situations are dealt with through financial or social capital. Need something? Call someone you know or pay extra to make it go away.

From a foreign perspective, usually, people want protection and are used to paying for it. We have many forms of “insurance” or guarantees that companies will charge us consumers for – to the point where that is the norm and expected for us.

Especially, in the context of renting a car, where you are used to rental car companies trying to get extra money for a small scratch here or there or a technicality.

2. Checking Local Places To Rent A Car In Shkoder

Now I’m speaking from my own personal experience, I went around to many places to rent a car in Shkoder. From what I encountered, many of them are the same.

Usually, small offices that do lots of different services. If you go check them out you will see they are like travel agents that do long-distance bus tickets (like to Germany or Italy) to booking flights, and more local things like day trips and daily bicycle rental.

You’ll recognize these offices because they will have signs that say makina me qera which means car for rent. What most quote you will be 25 euro per day for manual and 35 euro per day for automatic (it will be much higher in July, August, and maybe Sept).

This is without insurance though. When you ask about insurance, prices that they tell you (or make up on the spot) will vary.

One place that seemed more honest told me that none of these small places can offer you insurance, they just say there is insurance but there really isn’t any. Check out the prices in Tirana to compare.

3. My Advice For Renting A Car In Shkoder

Even though I live here and I’m used to how things are done, if I am putting a liability on myself like a rental car, I would still prefer to reduce the risk with insurance. I think a lot of you reading this will agree.

From my time of scouring the Shkoder car rental options, I did find some success! I ended up going with GoRent Albania – Shkoder location. Since they are a branch of a larger company, it seems like they offer legitimate insurance.

The only thing not covered is the bottom of the car, which they tell you upfront about. You can also use a credit card to make the deposit (or 300 euro in cash) and you can pay by card as well.

Unfortunately, since it is a small branch, they might not have any cars available in the height of summer. You can contact them in advance though to reserve.

Since they are the only company in Shkoder I feel comfortable recommending, if they don’t have cars, I’d say to just rent from Tirana.

There are bigger companies that will have plenty of availability and legitimate insurance coverage. Plus, if you are flying in, it’s best and most convenient to pick up your rental car at Tirana Airport.

4. Driving Conditions In Shkoder Albania

Like a lot of Albania, road conditions can be hit or miss. Popular tourist paths, like the road going to Theth, is well done and maintained. The less known or touristy a route is, the road conditions will go down.

If you’re serious about getting into the wilderness, make sure to get the appropriate vehicle. Rental cars oftentimes have low bottoms and can easily get ruined if you take them on less-than-ideal roads.

That is also in perfect conditions, if you plan to come in winter or the shoulder season (anything besides summer), this is more important as you’re more likely to encounter various weather scenarios.

5. Driving Etiquette In Shkoder

It all depends on where you were raised and the driving culture – but most consider Albania’s driving to be pretty crazy and even downright reckless. To rent a car in Shkoder, you should be a confident driver.

As long as you are vigilant and practice defensive driving, you should be fine. My biggest recommendation is that if you aren’t used to driving manual, this is not the place to practice. Get a car rental that you know you’ll be comfortable and confident with.

6. Parking In Shkoder

Parking in Shkoder can be a mess, because there are no rules or guidelines I know of. I’ve never seen any parking signs to indicate the laws. The police do patrol and give out tickets though.

It is based mostly on luck if you can avoid this. I suggest getting accommodation that includes parking, or parking on back streets that aren’t that busy. Usually, tickets are given on roads with more traffic. 

7. Gas / Petrol Stations In Shkoder

Contrary to what I’ve seen in some gas stations in the south, card payments are not accepted at fuel stations in and around Shkoder.

Sometimes they will have the card symbols but it still might not be the case in reality. Now, I haven’t been with people who ask to use card so maybe it is possible – but from the vibes it seems unlikely. Take cash with you always to fill up.

Car Rental In Shkoder – Final Thoughts

Renting a car in Shkoder, Albania, offers the freedom to explore northern Albania’s untouched landscapes. However, finding a rental company with legitimate insurance can be tricky.

Shkoder, the cultural capital of northern Albania, experiences significant seasonal changes, impacting tourism and driving conditions.

Local rental offices often lack proper insurance, making it essential to choose reputable providers. For the best experience, ensure your rental vehicle suits the local driving conditions.

Always carry cash for fuel as card payments are unreliable at gas stations. Defensive driving is crucial due to Albania’s challenging driving etiquette.

Since I’ve been living in Albania, specifically Shkoder city, I wanted to give you the full rundown of possibilities. There are so many off-the-beaten-path places just begging for some attention. Here are the 10 best day trips from Shkoder.

Most Popular Day Trips From Shkoder

Visiting the mountain village of Theth and the beautiful Shala River are two of the most popular day trips from Shkoder! A lot of this has to do with social media since these places are all over Instagram.

Even though they are well known, arranging a day trip from Shkoder is the easiest option for budget travelers or those who don’t want to rent a car or hitchhike.

1. Theth

Theth is a picturesque mountain village located in the northern part of Albania and makes for an excellent day trip from Shkoder.

It’s probably the most visited place in northern Albania and definitely one of the biggest tourist attractions in the whole country.

It’s well displayed on social media which means it can be very crowded, make sure to check out all of my tips and things to know before going to Theth!

Theth is renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Surrounded by rugged mountains, it is settled in a lush valley with a pristine, icey blue river.

It offers a breathtaking backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. It is situated within the Theth National Park, which is part of the larger Balkan Peace Park Project.

The park is a haven for hikers and adventure seekers, boasting numerous hiking trails, including the famous path to the Blue Eye waterfall –  a mesmerizing natural spring with crystal-clear waters.

In Albanian, it is called “Syri i Kalter”, but there are two in Albania, so this one is referred to as the one in the north – the other is in Saranda in the south. It’s a popular spot for a refreshing swim and provides a fun photo opportunity.

Theth is also known for preserving the traditional customs and architecture of Ghegaria (northern Albania). Visitors can see the charming stone houses in the traditional mountain style.

While it’s possible to visit Theth in a day, many visitors choose to stay overnight to fully experience the village’s tranquility. There are guesthouses and traditional inns where you can enjoy warm Albanian hospitality and some great organic, mountain cuisine.

You can do mostly outdoor activities, like hiking, swimming, and exploring the historical Lock-in Tower. It’s a great opportunity to take in the serene atmosphere and appreciate the slower pace of life in the Albanian Alps.

Getting There: Theth can be reached from Shkoder by road, and the journey itself offers scenic views. It’s approximately a 2 hour drive.

You can take the bus to Theth, there are two a day. You can check all the details in my Shkoder public transport guide.

The alternative is to drive but you should make sure to rent the appropriate car as it can be a challenging road with lots of zig zags. The weather can change for the worse quickly in the mountains so check conditions before setting out.

You can also do an organized day trip to Theth which helps to alleviate any driving stress! If you are short on time, I’d highly recommend it. You can also find day tours leaving from Tirana.

2. Lumi i Shales & Komani Lake

Visiting Lumi i Shales (Shala River) is a great idea for a day trip from Shkoder. Whether you’re interested in boat tours, swimming, or simply enjoying the picturesque surroundings, Shala River promises a day filled with natural beauty and outdoor adventure.

Lumi i Shales, also known as Shala River, is a beautiful waterway that meanders through the dramatic Albanian Alps. Its crystal-clear waters and surrounding landscapes make it a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

The river’s inviting but freezing waters provide an excellent opportunity for swimming and relaxation. Its purity and refreshing coolness make it a perfect spot to unwind on a hot day.

The journey along the Shala River is not just about the water; it’s also about the stunning scenery. The river has impressive canyons and rock formations. Towering cliffs, lush vegetation, and the sense of being completely surrounded by remote nature is an amazing experience.

After enjoying the river, you can eat at some of the local guesthouses and have fish caught in the river, along with other sides like bean soup, fresh salad, local cheese, etc. 

Beyond the river, the Shala Valley offers opportunities for hiking and exploration. You can trek through the nearby mountains or visit nearby villages to get a deeper sense of the region’s culture.

Getting There: Shala River is accessible by road from Shkoder to the Koman port. From there you then need to take a boat trip through Komani Lake and before turning onto Shala River. The journey itself offers glimpses of northern Albania’s isolation and scenic beauty.

If you decide to stay in the capital, you can still do a day trip from Tirana to Shala River.

Other Awesome Day Trips From Shkoder

There are plenty of amazing options for Shkoder day trips, but unfortunately, you can’t rely on public transport to reach many places. My suggestion is to rent a car at Tirana Airport so you can make sure to purchase legitimate insurance coverage.

One of the consistent buses you could take for a Shkoder day trip is going to the beach town of Velipoje. Technically they are furgons (small vans) that go at sporadic times – usually when the furgon fills up or if the driver decides to go. Look at your options here on the updated Shkoder bus schedule.

3. Thrown Sands / Rana e Hedhun

Rana e Hedhun, also known as Thrown Sands, is a unique natural wonder located near Shengjin, Albania. It’s renowned for its extraordinary geological formation where a a large sand dune goes from the top of a cliff to the seaside.

It is an excellent place to relax and soak up the sun. This large, sandy beach provides comfortable spots for sunbathing and plenty of room for beach activities.

Rana e Hedhun is easily accessible from Shkoder and other nearby towns. It’s a relatively short drive, making it a convenient day trip option for those looking to escape the city and explore Albania’s beautiful coastal landscapes.

Nearby Shengjin offers a variety of seafood restaurants where you can savor fresh catch-of-the-day dishes. Enjoying a delicious seafood meal by the sea is a delightful way to complete your day trip from Shkoder.

Try Restorant Detari, it’s my favorite. If you google the restaurant, the wrong location comes up so I’ve tagged the right one here.

4. Prekal Canyon

Located only 30 minutes driving away from Shkoder city center is the canyon of Prekal with the River Kiri running through it. It is also known as Kanione i Prekal and Kanione i Ures se Shtrejte – most locals just call it ‘Prekal’.

This is a popular swimming spot for locals in the summer. Unlike going to the beaches in Albania where you normally have to pay for a sunbed, going to Prekal is more cost-friendly for families.

It also has more adventure to it because it is a very deep canyon so it’s common to cliff jump into the water from different heights. Reserve your tour to Prekal here.

5. Razem & Boge

About 1-hour drive from Shkoder city center, you can reach the charming mountain villages of Razem and Boge. To reach Razem, you need to turn right off of SH21.

If you continue on SH21, you’ll reach the village of Boge. Both are beautiful areas where you can hike and have a picnic. In Razem there is also a large, level soccer/football field that you could play sports on too.

There are guesthouses in each village where you can eat, have a coffee and stay overnight. If you are visiting during the off-season (anytime besides June – August) some things could be closed.

In Razem, there are some restaurants/hotels that stay open so you can count on that when visiting. It didn’t seem like much was open when I visited Boge in the off-season.

6. Malesia e Madhe / SH20

Malesia e Madhe, which translates to “Great Highlands,” is a picturesque region located in the northern part of Albania. It is characterized by its stunning natural landscapes, including rugged mountains, lush valleys, and pristine rivers. The area’s untouched beauty is a major draw for nature enthusiasts.

Malesia e Madhe offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, trekking, and mountain biking. This is why I wrote a whole article about why it is the best road trip in Albania. The region is home to numerous trails that cater to varying skill levels, allowing visitors to explore the wilderness and take in breathtaking views.

It is easily accessible from Shkoder, making it a convenient day trip destination. The drive itself has scenic routes through the countryside for about 40 minutes before you start ascending into the highlands.

On the way back, you can stop at Bar Restaurant Syri i Sheganit for beautiful views of Lake Shkodra.

7. Ulza Regional Nature Park

Ulza Regional Nature Park is a beautiful natural area known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, making it a great Shkoder day trip if you’re a nature lover.

There’s a lake and the park offers a few hiking trails to explore its natural wonders. Ulza Park has numerous bird species inhabiting the area. It’s a great place to spot various avian species in their natural habitat.

It’s conveniently located, so It’s easily accessible for a day trip from Shkoder or Tirana. On your way back to Shkoder, stop at Restaurant Bezhi for some excellent grilled meat.

8. Cape Of Rodon / Lagoon of Patok

The Cape of Rodon has natural beauty that you’ll appreciate if you love the outdoors. It has some dramatic cliffs and beaches to swim at too, perfect for a fun, outdoorsy day trip from Shkoder. The area around the cape offers excellent hiking and exploration opportunities.

Some trails lead to various viewpoints where you can admire the coastal vistas. You can also see old communist bunkers, the Church of Mamica and explore the ruins of the ancient Rodoni Castle. The Cape of Rodon holds significant historical importance in Albania.

It is associated with the legendary Albanian hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, who led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. The cape is said to be one of Skanderbeg’s strongholds.

On the way back to Shkoder, stop at the coastal Lagoon of Patok for sunset. You can have some fresh seafood on cute, over-water bungalows there. If you’re in Tirana, you can visit with an organized tour to the Cape of Rodon with a wine tasting.

9. Kruja

Kruje (also seen as Kruja) is one of Albania’s most historically significant towns, known as the hometown of the national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg. Skanderbeg led a resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, and Kruje was his stronghold.

Visiting Kruje allows you to delve into Albania’s rich history and learn about Skanderbeg’s legacy. Kruje Castle (Kalaja e Krujes) is perched atop a hill with commanding views of the surrounding area. The castle houses a museum dedicated to Skanderbeg and the history of the resistance.

Exploring the castle and its museum is a must for history enthusiasts. In addition to the Skanderbeg Museum, Kruje also boasts an Ethnographic Museum (Muzeu Etnografik) where you can explore Albanian traditions, clothing, and daily life through various exhibits.

Kruje’s Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjeter) is a bustling market where you can shop for traditional Albanian crafts, souvenirs, and local products. Kruje often hosts cultural events and festivals that provide insights into Albanian traditions, music, and dance. Check if any events are scheduled during your visit to enhance your cultural experience.

Kruje is a great day trip from Shkoder because it’s conveniently located within a relatively short drive from Shkoder, about an hour and a half. If you end up staying in Tirana, you can also visit from there with this organized day trip to Kruje and Sari Salltik Cave.

10. Qafshtama National Park

Qafshtama is similar to Ulza but a much larger park that is located on the same road going to Kruja but much deeper into the mountains. It takes about 45 minutes from Kruja.

You might recognize this particular name as it’s on water bottles all over Albania – the company and water source are in this park.

Seeing things like Butrint national park, the Blue Eye, and Llogara national park on the Albanian Riviera are amazing. But these are always recommended by those who haven’t spent much time in Albania.

I’ve been living in Albania for two years and after going on this incredible north Albanian road trip, I think my mind is forever changed.

If you’re looking for inspiration for your road trip in Albania, you should seriously consider this underrated place!

The Best Undiscovered Albanian Road Trip

Okay, enough is enough – I’ll let you in on the secret. The best place for an Albanian road trip is in the region known as Malesia e Madhe which is roughly translated to Great Highlands in English.

This area has some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen, plus there is a unique cultural aspect.

Because of its natural geographical barriers, Malesia e Madhe is where many Albanians fled, to escape the Ottoman invasion and rule.

This helped preserve traditional Albanian culture for future generations and allowed people to continue freely practicing their religion. If you decide to drive the SH20 road on your Albanian road trip, you will see what I mean.

It is a very remote part of Albania, and without that road, it would be difficult to access, which makes sense why the Ottomans were kept out.

Hopefully knowing this will give you more perspective about the struggles Albanians have faced. I found it hard to imagine what life was like back then for those brave people who resisted.

5 Tips For Your Albanian Road Trip

Since there isn’t much information about this road trip in Albania, I figured that there are important things to know before setting off.

Since Malesia e Madhe is pretty out of the way, it is essential to be prepared before going. Here are some good tips to know for having the best Albanian road trip!

1. Things To Do Along SH20

Since this area of Albania is remote, don’t expect man-made tourist attractions. There aren’t any museums to visit – the main draw to driving on this specific Albanian road trip is for natural beauty and outdoor activities. 

Viewpoints

There are plenty of beautiful viewpoints to stop at and take photos. This also provides a nice breather from driving as well. Since the roads can be a bit crazy, it’s good to stop and rest for a few minutes. 

Swimming

The road goes along Lumi i Cemi (Cemi River) so if it is a hot day, it would be super refreshing to stop. Depending on rainfall and weather, the river often has this gorgeous blue/green color.

Like most rivers in the Albanian mountains, it will be very cold so it might not be enjoyable for everyone to swim in.

I grew up with cold mountain streams so it’s not as difficult for me but I understand others wouldn’t be used to it. Test it out first by just submerging your feet.

Have a picnic

It’s a bit sparse on SH20 until you to the small village of Tamare. There are some places to stop and eat, most connected to guesthouses for visitors.

Alternatively, you can bring your food to have a picnic wherever you find a good spot to enjoy.

Just remember to take any trash or containers back with you, to not contribute further to the trash pollution issue that’s prevalent in all of Albania.

Hiking

The scenery in Malesia e Madhe is breathtaking and extremely wild. It’s amazing to explore, but imperative that you do so safely.

Many people use local guides that know the terrain and paths. If you do decide to go by yourself, make sure someone knows where you are, especially if you’re alone.

I’d recommend using a hiking all like AllTrails for guidance, and to have a backup power source as well. Also, weather can be extreme and change quickly, check with locals on weather conditions before going.

Though I’m not trying to scare you, you need to know that people die in these mountains for not taking them (and the weather) seriously.

Just recently French and Belgian tourists died in the nearby area of Valbona. Unfortunately, the Albanian rescue services often have to risk their own lives to help too.

So please be careful, your actions affect more than just yourself.

Waterfalls

There are some gorgeous waterfalls to check out on your Albanian road trip in Malesia e Madhe. Many won’t be marked on google maps, so you’ll probably happen upon some as you explore.

There are a few marked though:

• Ujëvara e Selcës
• Ujevara e Lepushës 
• Ujëvara e Gjanve (near Vermosh)
• Ujevara e Bashkimit (near Vermosh)

Ujëvara means waterfall, so look for signs that have that word.

It also depends on when you’re visiting. If you’re there during the height of summer or directly after (July, August, September), the waterfalls will be pretty dry. Spring is the best time for them.

2. How Long Will It Take

From the city center of Shkoder to the end of SH20 in the mountain village of Vermosh, is said to be a two-hour drive of about 96km.

If you’re coming from Podgorica, it is listed as the same time, but 87km, plus there is a border crossing which will add time.

Coming from the city center of Tirana, it is 3 hours 40 mins and 200km, though the road from Tirana to Shkoder is known to have a lot of traffic, especially in the summer, so it might be longer.

These are just the estimates from google maps. In reality, even without traffic and border crossings, this drive will take you longer as it’s going over some steep mountains.

You can expect many hairpin turns from the mountain passes, as well as winding roads even when you’re driving in the valley along the Cemi River.

Plus if you factor in stopping at viewpoints, swimming, hiking, a picnic, etc., it will be much longer.

It is possible to do this as a day trip from Shkoder, as long as you don’t mind lots of driving.

I wouldn’t recommend doing it as a day trip from Tirana or Podgorica though with traffic and the border crossings could take a while (they don’t always).

Instead of trying to smush it all into one day, I’d recommend you stay overnight to take your time and enjoy Malesia e Madhe.

3. Where To Stay In Malesia e Madhe

Northern Albania is known for its traditions and hospitality, and you can see that with the number of guesthouses you’ll find.

When visiting the mountains, it’s the main type of accommodation. Of course, there are some fancy places, like this luxury resort in Boge. It’s located on the road to Theth and it’s perfect if you want to treat yourself or have a romantic weekend.

Though visiting Malesia e Madhe isn’t promoted a lot on international travel mediums, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t popular.

Albanians love to visit this area, especially ones that have emigrated away but come back every year for a summer holiday.

If you’re visiting from the middle of July to early September, you will need to arrange accommodation before. Here are some different options for you – I’ve arranged them by village.

Many guesthouses might only have 1-2 rooms so I’ve listed a few for each place so you can check on availability.

Tamare

Tamare is a place that has more of a small village vibe, with many guesthouses grouped close together. 

• Guesthouse Rireyiana, Sofra Kelmendit, and Te Gusti Hotel

Selce

Selce as a village is more spread out, so it feels a little more remote. It also doesn’t have as many options for accommodation, but it’s great if you’re looking for peace and quiet.

• Stay in a triangle-shaped cabin or the Turi-Selce guesthouse

Lepushe

Lepushe is the 2nd to last village you reach on SH20 before getting to the border with Montenegro. It’s known as the pearl of the Albanian Alps.

Though many people rush to Theth Village since it’s been promoted heavily, Lepushe is a really beautiful destination that is a great alternative.

• Guesthouse Alpini (they also have fancier private villas here that are perfect for a romantic weekend)
• Bujtina Tradicionale or Hotel Kelmendi – though it’s located off on a smaller road that might not be as accessible, talk with the host before booking

Vermosh

Vermosh is the last village you can reach on SH20 before the border with Montenegro. It’s another super area with lots of hiking and waterfalls to see. 

• Peraj Guesthouse or Hotel Vermoshi TDC
• Columbus Villas (probably the most luxurious place to stay in this region, great for a romantic getaway)

4. Where To Rent A Car

If you’re planning to start this road trip from Shkoder, it’s important to know how to get a rental car. Check out my full guide on day trips from Shkoder!

I have gone around and talked with many of the places that rent cars in Shkoder city center. You’ll recognize them because they have signs that say makina me qera which means car for rent.

What most quote you will be 25 euro per day for manual and 35 euro per day for automatic (it will be much higher in July and August).

This is without insurance though. When you ask about insurance, prices that they tell you (or make up on the spot) will vary.

One place that seemed more honest told me that none of these small places can offer you insurance, they just say there is insurance but there really isn’t any.

The only success I seemed to find was at GoRent Albania – Shkoder location. Since they are a branch of a larger company, it seems like they offer legitimate insurance.

The only thing not covered is the bottom of the car, which they tell you upfront about. You can also use a credit card to do the deposit (or 300 euro in cash) and you can pay by card as well.

Unfortunately, since it is a small branch, they might not have any cars available in the height of summer. You can contact them in advance though to reserve.

Since they are the only company in Shkoder I feel comfortable recommending, if they don’t have cars, I’d say to just rent from Tirana airport.

There are bigger companies that will have plenty of availability and legitimate insurance coverage.

5. More Important Things To Know For Your Albania Road Trip

Doing an Albanian road trip in Malesia e Madhe will undoubtedly be beautiful and fun, but there are important things to know.

Earlier in the hiking section I touched on how remote the area is, and how important safety is while hiking. Beyond that, there is still a need to be cautious.

Fuel Availability 

Since it is very remote, there are no gas (petrol) stations after you turn off the larger E762 road onto SH20.

You need to make sure to have a full tank of gas, especially if you plan on going all the way to Vermosh or if you are staying in the area for a few days.

Check how much your tank holds, as some can be quite small. You might need to take some reserve fuel.

Food Availability

The same warning goes for food. Guest houses usually provide food along with the lodgings, especially breakfast.

For some, meals might not be included so you will have to pay extra, or purchase food there, but don’t expect a big supply since it is remote.

To be safe, I’d suggest bringing along some snacks at least. If you’re strict on being a vegetarian or vegan, I’d say to bring food supplies as mountain food usually includes meat and dairy products (even indirectly like broth for soup).

Cash / ATMs

Albania is largely a cash society, even in bigger cities. You can expect to pay everything in cash in this region. If there aren’t gas stations, that should tell you how remote it is, so don’t expect card machines.

You should be able to pay in both Euro and Albanian Lek, but it will be easier to purchase small items with LEK like coffee and food.

If you use a large 50 euro bill to pay for coffee, you might not get the best exchange rate from the waiter. Paying for larger things like your accommodation is good to pay in euro (if you prefer).

Either way, make sure to visit an ATM in Shkoder or Tirana to withdraw enough money for fuel, food, and accommodation. Use the yellow and blue ATMs (Credins Bank) for free cash withdrawals in Albania.

Easier Albanian Road Trip Alternatives

Though I’d highly recommend doing an Albanian road trip, especially this specific one I’m suggesting, I know it might not suit everyone.

If you don’t feel comfortable driving or maybe you don’t want to go through the hassle of arranging a rental car, here are some alternative tours.

Hopefully, these can still give you a nice taste of what this region holds.

Whether you are wanting to be based in the north or just want to see the main attractions of Albania, I’ve put together 2 incredible itineraries for you.

There’s a lot of small things that I included because I think they’re important. This gives you different options to suit what you would prefer.

10 Days In Albania – Most Popular Attractions

If you’re coming for the first time and want to see the most popular attractions, this guide to 10 days in Albania will be great for your trip.

There’s so much more you can see besides these places, but I picked these because they are the most famous and pretty accessible even if you want to do public transport.

The only bad thing is that you are at the mercy of the bus schedule (which can be hard to find). Most trips to Albania will be 100 times better if you have the freedom to go wherever you want.

PSsst Public transport is chaotic. It doesn't work well if you have a short amount of time in Albania so I'd highly recommend renting a car. Compare the best deals on Tirana car rentals.

Day 1-2: Tirana

Tirana is the capital of Albania and is a great starting point for your trip. Spend the first two days exploring the city, which has a mix of Ottoman, Italian, and Communist-era architecture.

Visit the National Museum of History, the Bunk’Art Museum, and the Skanderbeg Square. Tirana also has a vibrant nightlife scene, so make sure to experience it!

Day 3: Kruja

Located just 30 km from Tirana, Kruja, Albania is a small mountain town that is famous for its beautiful views and the historic market and castle.

Kruja (or possibly somewhere close by) is also said to be the birthplace of Albania’s national hero, Skanderbeg.

Visit the centuries-old market, explore Kruja Castle, and learn more about Albania’s national hero at the Skanderbeg Museum, which houses weapons and artifacts from that time.

After spending a few hours there, drive north to Shkoder. Check out places to stay in Shkoder.

Day 4: Shkoder

Shkoder is the largest city in northern Albania and is located near the border with Montenegro. There are plenty of cool things to do in Shkoder like visiting Rozafa Castle – an impressive fortress perched on a hill overlooking the city.

The Marubi National Museum of Photography is also quite interesting because it has a collection of over 500,000 photographs portraying Albania’s most recent 100 years of history.

You can also explore the Shkoder Pedonale (pedestrianized boulevard) and enjoy some delicious local cuisine.

Day 5-6: Theth National Park

Theth National Park is a stunning wilderness area located in the Albanian Alps, and it is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and hikers.

The park offers spectacular landscapes, including towering peaks, impressive waterfalls, and dense forests.

The picturesque village of Theth is a popular base for exploring the park and is known for its traditional architecture and warm hospitality.

It can be a bit hard to access depending on the weather and road conditions, so it’s best to go for two days. Though it’s remote, there’s plenty of nature to explore. Check out places to stay in Theth.

Day 7-8: Berat

Head south to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Berat – known as the “City of a Thousand Windows.”

It is famous for its well-preserved Ottoman-era houses, which are built on the side of a hill overlooking the Osum River.

Spend two days exploring the castle, the Ethnographic Museum, trying wine from local vineyards, and adventure activities in the nearby Osumi Canyon and Tomorri Mountain National Park.

Day 9: Gjirokaster

Gjirokastra is another UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the best-preserved Ottoman towns in the Balkans.

Explore the castle, which dates back to the 12th century, and the Gjirokastra Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts from the Ottoman era.

Make sure to take your time enjoying the food here – it’s incredible.

Stop by Restaurant Muço for their incredible qofte and homemade raki and The Barrels-Te Fuçitë for some great wine and traditional appetizers. Check out places to stay in Gjirokaster.

Day 10: Saranda

There are a few different options to choose from on how to spend the last full day of your 10 days in Albania.

If you would like to have a beach day, go to Mirror Beach (Shpella e Pëllumbave) on the way to the Ksamil.

The other option is to stop on the way from Gjirokaster and see the Blue Eye – a natural wonder located near the village of Muzina.

It is a deep, crystal-clear natural spring with water so blue that it looks like it has been photoshopped. Some people take a dip in the chilly water, though I wouldn’t suggest it.

The water is a source for locals downstream and swimming can pollute it for them. After that, head towards the town of Ksamil and go past it to arrive at Butrint.

It’s an impressive UNESCO heritage site where you can see some of Albania’s best ancient ruins. Check out places to stay in Saranda.

How To Spend 10 Days In Northern Albania

Northern Albania is by far the least touristy area to explore. If you’re wanting to see some unusual or lesser-known spots, then this northern guide to 10 days in Albania will be great for you.

Day 1: Tirana

See the Tirana recommendations in the first itinerary. You can see some interesting things in Tirana, but it’s best to leave and more of what Albania has to offer outside of the capital. Check out places to stay in Tirana.

Day 2: Kruja and more

See the Kruja recommendation in the first itinerary. After visiting the charming Kruja, hopefully, you are ready for some great food.

Located on a beautiful lake, stop nearby at the Duka Winery, Vineyard, and Restaurant, for some delicious food and wine.

Another option is to stop at the Lagoon of Patok and have a nice seafood dinner while watching the sunset. There are even charming overwater bungalows at ‘Laguna e Patokut’ restaurant to dine in.

Day 3: Ulza Regional Nature Park & Lezhe Castle

Head north towards Ulza Regional Nature Park. Enjoy the beautiful drive along Shkopet Lake with the precarious Shkopet footbridge that you can cross if you dare.

Head further to Ulza Lake, crossing the beautiful Ulza Bridge. Stop for some lunch in Ulez and enjoy the lake.

Go back the same way and drive towards Lezhe to visit the historic Lezhe Castle.

Head to the close beach town of Shengjin. Check out some places to stay in Shengjin and make sure to visit Restaurant Detari for great seafood.

Day 4: Beach day at Rana e Hedhun

Spend the day relaxing at this cool sand dune beach known as Rana e Hedhun / Thrown Sand, Albania. This is very close to Shengjin, so it would be good to stay there again for the night.

Day 5: Shkoder

Drive north to the ‘capital’ of northern Albania – Shkoder. Nicknamed ‘Albania’s Ancient City’, Shkoder has been a beacon of music, art, and religious tolerance for centuries.

Spend the day getting to know the city by visiting Rozafa Castle, the Pedonale, and the Marubi National Photography Museum.

You can drive or rent bikes to cycle to the charming village of Shiroka on Shkodra Lake. Make sure to stop at Blue Notte or the further away Pelikani Kaçurrel for great fish or eel from the lake.

Day 6: Shala River

Take a day trip from Shkoder to the beautiful Lumi i Shales (Shala River). This place has been nicknamed the “Thailand of Albania” because of how lush the greens look and how blue the water looks.

It’s quite remote so it’s best to stay in Shkoder and just do a day trip. You’ll also get to see the famous Koman Lake on your way to Shala since the river runs into Koman.

You can book the day trip to Shala River here or wait until you are in Shkoder and try to arrange it the day before.

Sometimes the Shkoder hostels or hotels will be able to arrange it. The main downside is that if you are visiting during the busy season, tickets could be sold out if you wait till the day before.

Day 7: Prekal Canyon

Take another day trip out of Shkoder, but on the way out of town, make sure to stop at the interesting Venetian Mask Museum. Then drive towards the beautiful Ottoman architecture of Mesi Bridge.

This bridge is one of the largest Ottoman bridges in the region. Keep following the directions towards Prekal Canyon, but make a slight detour to visit the ancient Drishti Castle ruins.

Though there’s not much left of the ruins, it’s a nice place to hike up to get a good view. Start driving to Prekal Canyon and find a spot along the road (there are many) to park.

Enjoy a few hours of exploring the area, swimming, and jumping from the canyon walls. If you want a preview, check out my YouTube vlog about Prekal. Return to Shkoder to stay one last night.

Day 8: Malesia e Madhe Road Trip

This is one of the lesser-known regions in Albania, but it holds so much beauty and history.

Malesia e Madhe was where many people hid in resistance to the Ottoman invasion, which helped to protect Albanian culture and religious independence for future generations.

On the way out of Shkoder, drive north on the E762 towards Koplik. If you’re up for experiencing something alternative, stop at the Keq Marku Tattoo Art Studio which is housed in an old communist bunker.

If you’re itching to take a dip in Shkodra Lake, stop at Syri i Sheganit. Even if you’re not keen to swim, it’s still a nice place to enjoy and there’s a restaurant nearby that had a nice view.

Drive about an hour to Tamare, Albania, though it’s a beautiful drive so you want to stop and take photos for sure.

Plus, you might want to stop at yet another scary but beautiful here at a spot marked on Cemit River.

Day 9: Hiking & Waterfalls In Malesia e Madhe

All along SH20 there are places to stop to swim, hike, and take pictures. Take your time here and enjoy nature. Make your way to Selce, and hike to the waterfall of Selce.

Keep driving to Lepushe, where you will stay the night, and check out some guesthouses to stay.

If there’s still daylight and you’d like to explore, there’s plenty of hiking to be done, and you can go check out the Lepushe Waterfall.

Day 10: Vermosh

Before driving back to Tirana, take a few hours to explore the valley of Vermosh. There are two waterfalls to check out, the Baskimit Waterfall and Gjanve Waterfall, plus plenty of hiking.

There are also lots of nice guesthouses in Vermosh so you could always stay here before heading back to Tirana if you’d want.
